‘80s Heartthrob Thrills Fans With ‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’ Throwback Ahead of 2026 Return

Rick Springfield is bringing fans full circle. The beloved ‘80s rocker will make a return to ABC's New Year’s Rockin’ Eve for a rockin’ performance more than 40 years after first taking that stage.

To hype fans up for his appearance on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2026, Springfield, 76, shared an Instagram clip from his 1982 performance on the iconic New Year’s Eve show when Dick Clark was the host.

In the clip, Springfield performed his signature hit "Jessie’s Girl” while wearing an 80s-worthy pink suit. “Throwback to Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve 1982! I’ll take the @RockinEve stage again tomorrow, so join the party on New Year’s Eve at 8/7c on @ABC#RockinEve ?,” Springfield captioned the clip late on Dec. 30.

Longtime fans hit the comment section to share memories of Springfield’s first appearance on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.

“I was 14 and totally infatuated with him ?? ,” one fan wrote.

“10 year old me is glued to the set!!” another recalled.

“We had to be watching at that moment to see it. No YouTube or DVR,” another added.

“The very first time I was allowed to stay up late to watch that special because you were going to be on it,” another wrote to Springfield.

“I watched it then!!. I will watch it now!!” another fan chimed in.

Springfield first appeared on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve during the height of his fame as Dr. Noah Drake on the ABC soap opera General Hospital. At the time, his song “Jessie’s Girl” was a top radio hit.

In a November 2025 interview with Q1043 New York, Springfield said General Hospital helped fuel his music career.

“I think General Hospital, certainly being on TV was, you know, I mean, before the day I joined it, I was, you know, walking down the street and no one was paying any attention,” he shared. “Two weeks later, there were heads turning going, 'That isn't… that you know?’ So it was pretty powerful in that respect, and I think having a big song at that same time…”

Springfield noted that he got into acting as a way to pay the bills as he pursued his music career. He added that his General Hospital fame was a bit of a “double-edged sword.”

“I think a lot of people still view me as a kind of one-dimensional soap opera geek, you know, that got lucky with a song in a studio.”

In a new teaser for New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2026, Springfield said he knew legendary host Dick Clark “fairly well.” He also credited Clark’s New Year’s Eve classic for helping his career soar in the early 1980s.

“When music first broke for me, it was his New Year’s Eve show, that was one of the first shows I did,” Springfield recalled in the interview.
