CENTCOM says 25 Islamic State members neutralized and arrested in Syria

CENTCOM said it and its partners in Syria killed and captured 25 members of the Islamic State group in the days that followed a wide scale U.S. strike in Syria on 19 December.

In a statement published on Tuesday, 30 December, the U.S. Central Command said it neutralized seven Islamic State members and arrested the rest during 11 missions conducted between 20 and 29 December.

CENTCOM added that these operations also resulted in the destruction of four Islamic State weapons caches.

The latest missions, CENTCOM said, came after the launch of Operation “Eagle Eye” on 19 December, during which U.S. and Jordanian forces struck more than 70 targets using more than 100 precision guided munitions.

CENTCOM added that the strike was carried out by dozens of fighter jets, attack helicopters, and artillery, and that it destroyed Islamic State infrastructure and weapons sites across central Syria.

CENTCOM said that on 13 December, two U.S. service members and an American civilian were killed, and three others were wounded, in an armed ambush carried out by an Islamic State fighter against a joint patrol of U.S. forces and the Syrian army near Palmyra (Tadmur, in Homs province, central Syria).

CENTCOM commander Gen. Brad Cooper said in the statement that the United States would not back down and remained committed to working with regional partners to eliminate the Islamic State threat, which he said endangers U.S. and regional security.

Cooper said that in 2025, the group was involved in at least 11 plots targeting sites inside the United States, adding that, in response, U.S. forces and partner forces in Syria carried out operations over the past 12 months that led to the arrest of more than 300 people described as “terrorists,” and the killing of more than 20 others.

Cooper said that continuing to pursue “terrorist” elements, dismantle the group’s networks, and work with partners to prevent its return makes the United States, the region, and the world safer.

In response to the Palmyra attack

U.S. forces carried out military strikes against the Islamic State group in Syria on 19 December after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed a “decisive” response to the 13 December Palmyra attack.

The strikes targeted the Maadan desert area (in Raqqa province, northern Syria) and the al-Hamad desert (in Deir Ezzor province, eastern Syria).

CENTCOM said on X that the Jordanian Armed Forces provided support with fighter jets, and that the operation used more than 100 munitions for precision targeting of Islamic State infrastructure and weapons depots.

Cooper described the operation at the time as “decisive” in preventing the group from planning “terrorist” attacks against the United States, and said U.S. forces would continue pursuing those seeking to harm Americans and their regional partners.

A U.S. official told NBC that the objective of the operation was to strike locations where the group was trying to reorganize, eradicate those forces, and destroy their sites on a wide scale.

The official said the U.S. military used A-10 and F-16 aircraft, Apache helicopters, and HIMARS systems, while Jordanian F-16 aircraft also provided support.

Two U.S. officials said the strikes could continue for several weeks, or even up to a month.

    Trump warns

Trump said the operation came in response to what he described as “brutal” killings committed by the Islamic State group against the two U.S. soldiers in Syria.

“We are delivering very powerful strikes against the group’s strongholds in Syria,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account, adding, “Syria is a land drenched in blood and suffering from many problems, but it holds a bright future if the group is eliminated.”

Trump said the Syrian government, “led by a man working hard to make Syria great again,” fully supports the operation, referring to Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

He also warned “all terrorists” who dare attack Americans, telling them, “You will be hit harder than ever before if you attack or threaten the United States in any way.”

    About 80 operations since July

On 17 December, CENTCOM said U.S. forces and partner forces in Syria had carried out around 80 operations since July against individuals it described as “terrorist,” including remnants affiliated with the Islamic State group that posed a direct threat to the United States and its interests abroad.

CENTCOM said those operations resulted in the arrest of 119 individuals and the killing of 14 others, with the stated aim of preventing the group from rebuilding and inspiring attacks worldwide.
