Blackhawks 2, Islanders 3 (SO) — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks were really sloppy in the opening moments of the game, and it cost them. The Isles took the lead less than three minutes in, and were able to add a second goal on their only power play in the period. The Hawks did create some chances (shot attempts were tied at 20 and both teams had three high dangers chances by the end of the period) but, as was the case against Pittsburgh, the Blackhawks didn’t finish and their opponent did.

Chicago came out with a much stronger collective effort in the second period and it paid off. The Blackhawks scored twice in the final 4:29 of the period to take a tie game to the room for the second intermission. The Blackhawks held the Islanders to five shots on net in the second period.

The third period saw a lot of great chances on both ends of the ice — including a couple for the Blackhawks inside the final ten seconds of regulation. But nothing went in, and the final Blackhawks game of the calendar year needed overtime. And… yes, a shootout. Unfortunately, Bo Horvat was the only player to score in the skills competition.

    Star 1: Oliver Moore

I was interested to see how Moore looked playing center for the first time in the NHL, and he didn’t disappoint. Moore skated 4:28 in the first period, during which the Blackhawks had a 7-2 shot attempt advantage and 3-0 shot on net advantage. In the second period, Moore had assists on both Blackhawks goals. But his situational awareness to look up at the clock and know how much time he had before setting up the game-tying power play goal was so smart for a kid with his experience in the league. Moore won 8 of 10 faceoffs in regulation. He was special tonight.

    Star 2: Nick Lardis

Lardis led the Blackhawks with four shots on net thru two periods and scored this missile to tie the game with two seconds left in the second period while on the power play. He was assertive, physically stronger on the puck and looking to score. That’s his game — and he was on it tonight. At the end of two periods, Lardis and Moore were on the ice for both Chicago goals and a 7-0 shots on goal advantage. Lardis had five scoring chances in the first two periods; no other Blackhawk had more than two.

    Star 3: Artyom Levshunov

Levshunov was really active on the offensive side early in the game. Inside the final four minutes of the period, Levshunov got a great look at the net after showing great patience, but he hit the crossbar. He continued to show a lot of confidence with the puck in the second period and started the first scoring play. Unfortunately, he got called for a tripping call late in overtime, but the Hawks killed the penalty.

    Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks started overtime with Moore, Lardis and Levshunov on the ice together. After getting pulled in his previous game, Spencer Knight rebounded with a good game tonight. He stopped 18 of 20 in regulation. Here’s Teuvo Teräväinen‘s goal from the second period:

    — BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) December 31, 2025 Jason Dickinson was on the ice to end the first period, but did not come out for the start of the second. He did not return. The game got predictably more physical in the third period, and Colton Dach answered the bell. He led the Blackhawks with seven hits — more than double anyone else on the roster. Alex Vlasic did a marvelous job on the penalty kill in overtime.
