Illinois Secretary of State’s Office is warning residents to not respond or open any links if they get a text message claiming they owe money for traffic violations or unpaid tolls.
The scam texts that recently surfaced typically claim the recipient’s vehicle registration or driving privileges are at risk of being suspended and ask for immediate action through a link, Illinois Secretary of State’s Office warned Tuesday.
The scam messages are phishing attempts meant to scare people into providing personal information and as a means to steal money.
“Phishing scams continue to be a persistent threat, especially during the holiday season, with criminals repeatedly attempting to steal Illinoisans’ personal information and hard-earned money,” Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said. “These messages are designed to look legitimate, which is why it’s important for residents to remember that our office will never contact them by text about license or registration issues. Ignoring and reporting these scams helps protect everyone.”
The only legitimate text messages you could receive from the Illinois Secretary of State would be a reminder message for a scheduled DMV appointment, ILSOS said. The Secretary of State’s office does not send texts related to driver’s license status, vehicle registration issues or enforcement actions.
Giannoulias tweeted about the scams on Tuesday, warning the public to “remain vigilant.”
