Because there have been so many unforgettable seasons, great teams and legendary stars, we’ve got our historical NFL TRACR to help us determine which franchise had the best single season between 2000 and 2025.
John Elway wrapped up a Hall of Fame career with back-to-back Super Bowl titles. The “Greatest Show on Turf” was just beginning its rise to prominence. And the New England Patriots were only two years away from the start of their dynasty.
It was the turn of the century in the NFL. And there’s been a lot of history made since 2000.
Over the course of the past 25 years, the aforementioned Patriots have won six championships and came close to going undefeated in another season. The Peyton Manning-Tom Brady rivalry was born, with the “GOAT” Brady winning seven titles while with the Pats and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
More recently, we’ve witnessed the rise of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, who had their run of seven straight AFC championship or Super Bowl appearances end in 2025.
Because there have been so many unforgettable seasons and great teams, we’ve enlisted the help of our historical NFL TRACR (Team Rating Adjusted for Competition and Roster) to determine which team had the best single season between 2000-25.
TRACR normalizes performance from factors that can either inflate or deflate its numbers, making it possible to compare teams across eras. That’s done with a model that uses advanced metrics and other factors to calculate how many points per 10 drives better or worse teams are or were compared to the league-average club during a given season.
We can also take it one step further and rate teams by offensive TRACR (O-TRACR) and defensive TRACR (D-TRACR). Note that lower is better for defensive ratings in each sport.
It’s important to note that our model measures performance over the entirety of the season. So when it comes to our rankings, the best team during a given season might NOT have won the championship. We’re looking to do more than just list the title winners.
So here are the highest-rated NFL teams of the past 25 years, per TRACR.

1. 2007 New England Patriots (20.60 TRACR)
We mentioned earlier that not every team that finished with an elite TRACR during this span won the Super Bowl. And that includes the dominant 2007 Patriots that had the top TRACR recorded since 1991. With Tom Brady, Randy Moss and Wes Welker leading the way, New England made history with a 16-0 regular season but were stunned by Eli Manning and the New York Giants 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Arizona.
2. 2019 Baltimore Ravens (15.43)
It’s safe to say the Ravens soared into the playoffs in 2019. After a 2-2 start, they won 12 in a row – including eight by double digits – behind NFL MVP Lamar Jackson. But a team that seemed destined for a run to the Super Bowl after one of the most impressive regular seasons the NFL has seen over this time frame suffered a stunning 28-12 loss to Derrick Henry and the Tennessee Titans in the AFC divisional round. Henry ran for 195 yards and Jackson threw for 365 yards and a touchdown but also had two interceptions in Baltimore’s first loss in more than three months.
3. 2001 St. Louis Rams (15.27)
Of course, one of the “Greatest Show on Turf” teams had to rank pretty high on the list. Led by Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce, the 2001 Rams went a league-best 14-2 and have the 11th-best O-TRACR since 1991. The offense was so good that the Associated Press named Warner the MVP, while Faulk won the MVP vote from the Pro Football Writers of America. But in something of a coming out party for the great Bill Belichick, the Patriots devised a plan to slow the Rams in a 20-17 upset win in Super Bowl XXXVI.
4. 2010 New England Patriots (14.10)
The Patriots finished a league-best 14-2 in 2010 when Tom Brady threw for 3,900 yards with 36 touchdowns and four interceptions on the way to his second NFL MVP Award. However, two of their three losses that season came against Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets, who beat them 28-21 in the AFC divisional round.
5. 2012 New England Patriots (13.91)
A year after throwing for a career-high (at the time) 5,235 yards, Tom Brady threw for another 4,827 with 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions during New England’s 12-4 season. After losing to the Baltimore Ravens 31-30 in Week 3, the Patriots lost to Joe Flacco and the Ravens once again in the AFC title game.
6. 2013 Seattle Seahawks (13.29)
Behind their “Legion of Boom” defense, Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch, the Seahawks reached back-to-back Super Bowls at the end of the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The data shows the run to the franchise’s first championship was the more impressive campaign. The team’s dominant defense shows out in the rankings as well with the fourth-best D-TRACR over this span behind only the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 2000 Baltimore Ravens and 2015 Denver Broncos.
7. 2024 Detroit Lions (13.03)
In 2023, the Lions won their first division title since 1993 and won their first playoff game since 1991. However, that team ranks third (4.1) when it comes to the franchise’s best during the historical TRACR era (since 1991). The best team by far was the 2024 Lions that went a franchise-best 15-2 and earned the No. 1 seed in the NFC before they were stunned by the Washington Commanders in the divisional round.
8. 2024 Baltimore Ravens (13.02)
Earlier, we broke down the 2019 Ravens, who ended up ranking as one of the best teams of the TRACR era despite a disappointing finish. The 2024 Ravens, who lost to the Bills in the divisional round, were next with the 13th-best TRACR of the era at 13.0 and they have the eighth-best mark since 2000.
9. 2007 Indianapolis Colts (12.96)
Peyton Manning and Tom Brady took part in a great rivalry during the 2000s, with Manning and the Colts finally breaking through with their first Super Bowl title at the end of the 2006 season. But it was the following 2007 campaign that had the highest TRACR of this stretch. Manning threw for 4,000 yards, Joseph Addai ran for 1,000 yards and Reggie Wayne had 1,500 yards receiving in a 13-3 season. Indianapolis, however, fell short of its bid to repeat in a 28-24 loss to the Philip Rivers-led San Diego Chargers in the AFC divisional round.
10. 2019 Kansas City Chiefs (12.34)
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have been the kings of the NFL in recent years. At the end of the 2023 season, they became the first team since the 2003 and 2004 Patriots to win back-to-back titles. However, Kansas City’s first championship season of this dynasty was its greatest, according to the data. Mahomes finished with 4,030 passing yards and a career-low five interceptions in 14 games and Travis Kelce had 97 receptions for 1,229 yards as the Chiefs won their last nine games after a 6-4 start. Mahomes won the first of his three Super Bowl MVPs as KC rallied past San Francisco 31-20 in Miami.
11. 2009 New Orleans Saints (12.02)
At 13-0 heading into Week 14 of the 2009 season, it may not have been a surprise that the Saints ended up winning the Super Bowl. But it was what occurred along the way that made the season quite remarkable. New Orleans lost its final three games of the regular season, had to pick off a Brett Favre pass to force overtime in the NFC championship game and then used a surprise onside kick to open the second half to key a 31-17 win over Peyton Manning and the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. Drew Brees tied a Super Bowl record with 32 completions for 288 yards and two touchdowns and was named the game’s MVP.
12. 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (12.01)
Tampa Bay’s first season in the NFC South was one to remember. After falling short in three straight playoff appearances in their final three seasons in the NFC Central, the Buccaneers went 12-4 and finally got past the Eagles 27-10 in the conference championship game after losing to Philadelphia by a combined 52-12 margin the previous two postseasons. 2002 was Jon Gruden’s first season in Tampa after taking over for Tony Dungy, but Dungy’s defensive influence remained. So did Derrick Brooks, Ronde Barber, John Lynch, Warren Sapp and Co., which held opponents to 10 points or less 11 times and ranks No. 1 in D-TRACR since 1991.
13. 2021 Buffalo Bills (11.94)
Buffalo finished a hardly spectacular 11-6 in 2021, but five of those losses were by seven or fewer points, and the team’s plus-218 point differential was its largest of this era. After stomping the Patriots 47-17 in the wild-card round, the Bills went toe-to-toe with Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs before finally running out of gas in a 42-36 overtime loss that is considered one of the most memorable playoff games of all time.
14. 2023 Baltimore Ravens (11.85)
Lamar Jackson won his second MVP and the Ravens matched a franchise record with a league-best 13 wins in 2023. They clubbed the Houston Texans 34-10 in the AFC divisional round before falling 17-10 in a showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs in the conference title game.
15. 2011 New Orleans Saints (11.60)
Led by AP Offensive Player of the Year Drew Brees, Jimmy Graham and Marques Colston, the Saints won 13 games and carried a nine-game winning streak into the NFC divisional round against the San Francisco 49ers. Brees threw for 462 yards and four touchdowns, while Darren Sproles, Colston and Graham combined for 29 catches for 357 yards and four scores. It wasn’t enough as the 49ers scored the go-ahead TD with nine seconds remaining in a 36-32 win.
16. 2014 New England Patriots (11.54)
So many great New England seasons to choose from. But in 2014, after a 2-2 start, the Patriots won 13 of their last 15 games – including a 28-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Who can forget Malcolm Butler’s interception of a Russell Wilson pass with Seattle on the New England 1-yard line with 26 seconds left that sealed the victory? Not Marshawn Lynch.
17. 2000 Oakland Raiders (11.52)
The Raiders haven’t had a ton of success over this span, but they did reach the Super Bowl behind NFL MVP Rich Gannon at the end of the 2002 season before losing 48-21 to former coach Jon Gruden and the Buccaneers. However, it was the 2000 team that was the franchise’s best during this time. That club finished 12-4 and reached the AFC title game before falling 16-3 against a Ray Lewis-led Ravens defense.
18. 2005 Indianapolis Colts (11.46)
The Colts set a franchise record with 14 victories (they would match it four years later) in 2005, but suffered a stunning 21-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers (more on them in a bit) in the AFC divisional round. Peyton Manning and Co. would make up for a year later by beating the Chicago Bears in the Super Bowl.
19. 2004 Indianapolis Colts (11.46)
Peyton Manning had his first big season – at least statistically – on the way to his first MVP in 2004. He finished with career highs of 4,557 yards and 49 touchdowns while only throwing 10 interceptions. The Colts ended up 13-5, including the playoffs, with two of those losses coming to Tom Brady and the Patriots – the last a 20-3 setback in the AFC divisional round.

The Steelers posted their best record in 2004, finishing 15-1 before losing 41-27 to Tom Brady and the Patriots in the AFC championship game. But it was the 2005 team that stunned the 14-2 Colts before beating the Seahawks 21-10 in Super Bowl XL that tops the list. With Ben Roethlisberger in the captain’s chair, Pittsburgh rattled off eight straight victories after a three-game skid dropped it to 7-5 heading into Week 14.
21. 2018 Kansas City Chiefs (11.33)
This was Patrick Mahomes’ breakout second season in which he compiled 5,097 yards with 50 touchdowns and 12 interceptions on the way to his first MVP Award. Mahomes, though, would have to learn how to get past Tom Brady and the Patriots, who knocked Kansas City out of the playoffs in an overtime thriller in the AFC title game.
22. 2023 Dallas Cowboys (11.20)
Because they didn’t have much success in the postseason, people tend to forget that the Cowboys had three straight 12-win seasons from 2021-23. According to the model, their best performance was in 2023 when they won the NFC East title but lost 48-32 to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round.
23. 2004 New England Patriots (10.93)
There weren’t many teams that could get past Tom Brady and the Patriots during this time frame, including the Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid-led 2004 Philadelphia Eagles who lost 24-21 to New England in Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville.
24. 2024 Philadelphia Eagles (10.93)
There haven’t been many teams that could get past Mahomes and the Chiefs during this time frame, but the 2024 Eagles did it in dominant fashion with a 40-22 victory in Super Bowl LIX. Philadelphia matched a franchise record with 14 regular-season wins (tied with the 2022 team that lost to KC in Super Bowl 57.
25. 2012 Denver Broncos (10.65)
With Peyton Manning on board in 2012, the Broncos finished 13-3 for their best record in seven seasons. Manning, who hadn’t played the year before due to injury, threw for 4,659 yards with 37 touchdowns and 11 picks to earn AP Comeback Player of the Year honors. Denver was knocked off by the Baltimore Ravens 38-35 in the AFC divisional round but reached the Super Bowl in two of the next three years.
