General Hospital head writers Chris Van Etten and Elizabeth Korte are looking ahead to the future of Port Charles as the long-running ABC soap opera heads into 2026.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, the pair spoke with veteran soap opera journalist Stephanie Sloane about their creative approach and teased the major storylines viewers can expect to see unfold in the months ahead.
Reflecting on their perspective as a writing team, Van Etten and Korte emphasized a character-first approach to storytelling. “All story comes from character,” they told TV Insider. “Where the characters are now, where we can take them next.”
Van Etten and Korte have served as General Hospital’s head writing team since August 2024. They explained that their focus remains on challenging both the characters and the audience while honoring long-standing relationships within the show’s long history.
The writers shared, “We ask ourselves, ‘How can we challenge them? Surprise them? What will touch their hearts, and ours? How can we discover new strengths — and weaknesses?”
The Daytime Emmy winning team expanded, sharing, “What are the new and unexpected connections [between the characters]? Where are the time-tested relationships we can sustain and deepen?’ We want to tell story that keeps you anticipating — while revealing new facets of the characters we love.”

During the interview, Van Etten and Korte also teased several upcoming story developments, including the highly anticipated return for Maxie Jones, following recent comments from Kirsten Stormshinting at her comeback. The writers further previewed the eventual reveal of “Who Shot Drew (Cameron Mathison),” in addition to multiple story arcs that will unfold throughout the year, such as Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Laura Collins (Genie Francis) plan to take down Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota) to Gio Palmieri (Giovanni Mazza) and Emma Drake (Braedyn Bruner) budding romance, along with so much more as Port Charles moves into its next chapter.
Van Etten and Korte took home the Daytime Emmy award for Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Daytime Drama Series in the 2025 Daytime Emmy awards.
