Actor Scott Patterson, who famously played Gilmore Girlscharacter Luke Danes, got candid about the beloved show's ending after its 7th season in 2007.
In an October 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Patterson shared that he and his castmates were pleased to have the opportunity to reprise their Gilmore Girls characters in the 2016 four-episode Netflix revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. He explained that the original series had an abrupt end, meaning the show's stars didn't get closure.
"We just drank it up [getting to reunite for the minseries] because when [the original show] ended in 2007, we were all scattered to the four corners of the earth," said Patterson during the interview. "I was on a movie set in Toronto when I got a call from my manager saying it was all over, and other people found out in similar ways. And nobody got closure. We didn’t get to say goodbye. So there was no real ending and this was a way to do it right, if in fact it was going to be the last one, which I don’t think it will be."
In addition, Patterson expressed gratitude for his role as the grumpy diner owner.
"It’s the great role of my life. It doesn’t matter what I do the rest of my career, nothing’s gonna match that. I know it, fans know it, I embrace it, and it’s a miracle that lightning ever struck once, right? And when it does, man, grab it, cause it ain’t gonna happen again. I’m just very grateful," said Patterson to The Hollywood Reporter.
Scott Patterson Explained Why He Thinks Fans Are Drawn to Luke & Lorelai's Romance
One of the most compelling storylines on Gilmore Girls was Luke's slow-burn romance with Lorelai Gilmore, played by Lauren Graham. After a few breakups, the characters eventually wed in the final episode of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
While speaking toSunrisein May 2025, Patterson shared why he thinks Gilmore Girls fans enjoy Luke and Lorelai's relationship. He explained that fans adore Lorelai because of her fierce independence as a single mother. In addition, he said he thinks viewers liked that Luke had feelings for Lorelai "for so long before they got together." Patterson also noted that Lorelai and Luke didn't kiss until the show's fourth season. The actor shared that he thought it was a smart move for the show's creators, Amy Sherman-Palladinoand Dan Palladino, to "draw [the romance] out for so long," despite the characters' obvious chemistry.
"That first kiss was quite something," said Patterson in the May 2025 interview.
