The Dallas Cowboys made a transaction on Tuesday that made my head turn.
Two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs has been let go by the team and is on waivers. It has been a wild year for Diggs, who spent time on injured reserve this season because of a knee injury and missed time earlier in the year while in concussion protocol after an accident in his home. For what it’s worth, Diggs has played on 90.7 percent of the team’s defensive snaps in the last two games. So perhaps there is something left in the tank. However, I’m not sure how much could be left because the numbers aren’t friendly.

For instance, Trevon Diggs’ 56.1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus ranks 79th of 113 cornerbacks. He is also allowing a league-worst 158.3 passer rating and a 17.9 yards per reception allowed average that also ranks as the worst among NFL corners. YIKES! It’s almost as if there are good reasons for the Cowboys to cut ties with the 2021 first-team All-Pro.
Cowboys Waive Trevon DIggs — Is There a Bears Fit?
The Chicago Bears have spent most of the year dealing with cornerback issues. Kyler Gordon has had two stints on injured reserve. Jaylon Johnson has missed a bunch of time due to injuries, too. And while CB1 is back in the mix, he still isn’t playing a full snap share. Nahshon Wright has been a fun story to follow as he has put together a Pro Bowl-worthy résumé this season. C.J. Gardner-Johnson has provided a spark with his versatility. So, on the one hand, I feel as if Chicago’s depth at cornerback is good right now. But on the other hand, I’d be cuirous to know what Al Harris thinks.
Bears Defensive Backs Coach Al Harris had Trevon Diggs when the two were in Dallas. And it feels worth pointing out that DIggs was a two-time Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro under Harris’ watch. If Harris believed he could coax that out of Diggs in the postseason, then I would be open to hearing that argument. Let me be clear. I’m not banging the table for Chicago’s football team to scoop Diggs off the waiver wire. However, what I am saying is that I would be open to the idea of the Bears bringing Diggs on if — and only if — it came at the recommendation of Al Harris.

Even if Al Harris *DID* recommend bringing Trevon Diggs into the mix, I’d do so with caution. And I certainly wouldn’t do it with a waiver claim. ESPN reported that any team that snaps up Diggs from the waiver wire would be responsible for his base salary for the week ($472,000) and a bonus ($58,823) if he is active. There is no more guaranteed money left on Diggs’ deal, but I struggle to see a team bite on a waiver claim. Nevertheless, this situaiton feels worth monitoring.
