PITTSFORD, N.Y. — A convicted felon is facing new charges after Monroe County sheriff’s deputies say he was found with a ghost gun.
On Dec. 9 at 2:12 p.m. deputies say they were called to check on the welfare of 54-year-old Cameron Sanderson. They say when entering Sanderson’s Pittsford home, they found him inhaling “duster.”
Sanderson was detained by deputies for his safety. During the investigation, deputies say they found one round of live rifle ammunition on the floor of his home.
According to deputies, Sanderson is known to them, and therefore it is illegal for him to have any firearms or ammunition.
Deputies say they worked with investigators, who were able to get a search warrant for Sanderson’s home. During the search warrant, investigators say they found a semi-automatic handgun loaded with six rounds of ammunition, considering it a ghost gun.
Sanderson was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second and third degrees. He was brought to the Monroe County Jail and held on bail.
On Dec. 16, Sanderson posted bail, and was released on pretrial with an electronic ankle monitor as a condition of his release.
What is a ghost gun?
The term ghost gun is used to describe firearms not properly registered or trackable. According to deputies, this makes it hard for law enforcement to investigate when ghost guns are used in a crime.
Deputies say ghost guns rarely have a serial number, and are mostly manufactured using 3D printing.
