Latakia’s Internal Security Command announced a curfew in Latakia city (on Syria’s Mediterranean coast), starting at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 30 December 2025, and lasting until 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 31 December 2025.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the Internal Security Command said the curfew does not apply to emergency cases, medical staff, or ambulance and firefighting teams. It added that basic services will continue during the curfew hours.
The command urged residents to fully comply with the decision and cooperate with the units tasked with enforcing it, warning that legal measures will be taken against violators.
The curfew decision came after unrest in the governorate on Tuesday, following the funeral of an Internal Security member who was killed while securing protests in Latakia governorate on 28 December.
Events that prompted army intervention
Groups of the Syrian army, backed by armored vehicles and armored personnel carriers, entered the centers of Latakia and Tartus cities after attacks escalated by groups the Defense Ministry described as “outlaws,” targeting residents and security forces.
The ministry said the army’s mission was to maintain security and restore stability in cooperation with the Internal Security Forces.
The intervention followed the killing of three people, including an Internal Security member, and the injury of 60 others, as well as damage to a number of Internal Security Command vehicles and two ambulances, amid “assaults” and unrest after demonstrations on Syria’s coast, according to Latakia governorate’s public relations director, Nour al-Din Breimo, who spoke to Enab Baladi at the time.
Breimo said a group of “remnants of the fallen regime” among the demonstrators attacked public property, then opened fire on security personnel and civilians. He added that most of the injured were civilians, in addition to security members, and that the wounded were taken to hospitals in Latakia and Jableh (south of Latakia city, on Syria’s Mediterranean coast).
Protests calling for federalism
Cities and rural areas in Latakia and Tartus governorates, as well as areas in Homs (central Syria), the western countryside of Hama (west central Syria), and the al-Ghab Plain (northwestern Syria, part of Hama province), saw demonstrations on 28 December in main squares and key gathering points, amid tightened security measures and a heavy deployment of government forces.
The protests were held under the name “Flood of Dignity,” in response to a call issued on 27 December by Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, head of what is known as the “Supreme Alawite Islamic Council in Syria and the Diaspora.”
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Latakia said at the time that the al-Ziraa district in Latakia city saw two demonstrations, amid tightened security measures and a heavy deployment of government forces. One rally was pro government, while the other raised slogans calling to “stop the killing,” “federalism,” and “justice.” Demonstrators also condemned the bombing that took place at the Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque in Homs on Friday, and called for the release of detainees arrested after the fall of the previous regime.
The correspondent added that pro government groups tried to move into neighborhoods in the city, but security forces prevented them from doing so, noting that there were verbal altercations between demonstrators.
Clashes also broke out at the al-Azhari roundabout in Latakia, starting with stone throwing, followed by gunfire from buildings, according to the correspondent. This led to clashes between Internal Security Forces present at the scene and gunmen who took advantage of the gatherings.
According to the correspondent’s monitoring at the time, pro government demonstrators used bladed weapons and smashed shopfronts and cars in the al-Raml al-Shamali neighborhood in Latakia.
