In fact, fans were first worried that Steve would die earlier in Season 5, potentially in episode 5, "Shock Jock," a title which some speculated could be a reference to his earlier days on the show and a possible electrocution on the radio tower.
However, Steve, along with every other main character in the show, has survived Volumes 1 and 2 of Season 5. That doesn't mean everyone is out of the woods, though—far from it—and the final Stranger Things trailer indicates that someone is indeed dying.
Specifically, the trailer shows someone holding Dustin back as he screams, in a moment that certainly seems like Dustin witnessing the death of someone he cares about. Of course, there are plenty of characters Dustin cares about, but perhaps none as much as he does Steve.
Is this really Steve's death, though? Audiences obviously won't know for sure if Steve makes it out alive until the credits roll on Stranger Things for the very last time, but there are a few reasons to think this isn't actually Steve's death.
For one, Season 5 Volume 2 had an incredibly emotional scene between Steve and Dustin (one of several, actually), wherein Dustin spoke about how he wouldn't be able to handle Steve's death, especially after his loss of Eddie. Could this conversation and the "You die, I die" scene actually be setting up Steve's death? Sure. But that doesn't seem likely.
It would be beyond brutal for the finale to rip yet another mentor and brother figure away from Dustin, especially when he's already been shown to be so distraught in Season 5. The Duffer Brothers have also indicated they're not trying to shock or upset anyone with deaths in the finale, and while it may not do the former (given all the speculation), it would certainly do the latter.
If anything, it seems like this is a red herring, and audiences are being tricked into thinking it will be Steve when it's actually someone else. The most likely suspect is Mr. Clarke, as he's another character Dustin shares a bond with, but his death wouldn't be as crushing. This would also follow the Duffers' pattern of killing off important but not truly central characters.
This all remains to be seen, however, and the death of fan-favorite babysitter Steve Harrington is far from off the table.
