Following a lengthy break from acting brought upon by complications from his Parkinson's diagnosis, Michael J. Fox is officially returning for his first significant performance since 2020.
As seen in the new trailer for the third season of Apple TV+'s Shrinking, the 64-year-old Fox is set to portray a character afflicted by the same disease he suffers from in real life.
At one point in the trailer, Fox is shown sitting beside Harrison Ford's character, Dr. Paul Rhoades, inside a medical facility as they both await treatment.
“What are you in for?” Fox's character quips.
"Parkinson's," Ford's Paul responds. "You?"
In a deadpan voice, Fox's character replies, "A haircut," leading both men to chuckle.
As viewers familiar with the series likely know, Ford's character in Shrinking has struggled with Parkinson's since season one. After attempting to hide the disease from his friends and loved ones, Paul slowly comes to accept the reality of the disease, allowing him to face the symptoms head-on as the series progresses.
Of course, Fox himself has long grappled with the realities of Parkinson's. Initially diagnosed with the disease back in 1991, the Back to the Futurestar kept his condition private until 1998, forcing him to exit from his hit ABCsitcomSpin City at the end of its fourth season.
Over the years, Fox's increasing struggles with Parkinson's have forced him to take on less and less acting roles, forcing him to retire from the craft in 2020 due to his health. However, the '80s icon has also sporadically returned to acting in limited capacity, including a vocal cameo as Michael J. The Fox in Disney's Zootopia 2.
With his role in Shrinking, Fox once again partners with Spin City's creator Bill Lawrence, marking the third collaboration between the two following the ABC political satire and Lawrence's NBC medical sitcom Scrubs.
