Anyone familiar with either Chevy Chase or the NBCsitcomCommunity likely have some knowledge about the iconic comedian's highly volatile exit from the show following its fourth season.
But in the new documentary, I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, more information about the 82-year-old actor's departure from Community are finally coming to light, including a racially-charged incident that ultimately led to Chase's "full meltdown" on set.
According to the documentary's interview with director Jay Chandrasekhar, the incident initially took place in 2012, which saw Chase's character, less-than-PC community college student Pierce Hawthorne, using a "blackface" hand puppet for a small scene in the show.
Chase, who was growing increasingly frustrated with the direction of his sitcom character, blurted out the N-word "when questioning the dialogue," according to The Hollywood Reporter. As per THR, both of Chase's co-stars, Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown, both of whom are Black, were present when Chase used the slur, although the remark was not directed at either one of them.
“I know that there was a history between [Chevy and Yvette] around race, and she got up and stormed out of there," Chandrasekhar remembered. "Chevy storms off, so the producer is like, ‘We need Yvette in the scene, right?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, she’s in the next scene.’ And he goes, ‘Well, she won’t come out unless Chevy apologizes to her.’ ”
When the director broached the topic with Chase, the SNL star played down the situation, likening the incident to a famous Saturday Night Live sketch featuring himself and Richard Pryor.
“He goes, ‘You know, me and Richard Pryor, I used to call Richard Pryor the N-word, and he used to call me The H**ky, and we loved each other,'" Chandrasekhar said. "And I’m like, ‘I know, man, I love that bit.’ I said, ‘You know, can we just have a little apology?’ He goes, ‘For what?’"
A day later, someone attached to the sitcom leaked that there was a "racial incident" that occurred on-set, sparking yet another outburst from Chase, this time geared towards everyone involved in Community.
As Chandrasekhar recalled, Chase came “storming onto the set, and he goes, ‘Who f***ed me over?’ … ‘My career is ruined! I’m ruined!’ Like, it’s a full meltdown. ‘F*** all of you!’"
"And I’m like, ‘Alright, let’s shoot the scene,’" continued the director. "He never ended up coming back after that."
