What was your Instagram-worthy feast this past Christmas Day?
Over in Japan, dinner was served aplenty at a little known restaurant known as KFC.
That's right. According to the Daily Record, a whopping 3.6 million residents in the Asian country dine at the iconic fast-food chain — which begs the question: What exactly is the Colonel's appeal on this holiday of all holidays?
"It all stems from Japan being an incredibly secular country," John Mason International Executive Director Simon Hood told the Scottish newspaper. "Almost half of people [in Japan] define themselves as atheist, another as Buddhist with only a tiny minority being Christian."
Hood continued, "In this context it makes sense, most people have no connection to the holiday and therefore have traditions that may seem completely bizarre to us. But when all is said and done, nobody eating at KFC on Christmas Day has to do an hour of washing up, so who is the real winner here — us or Japan?"
Earlier this month, KFC announced plans to commemorate 2026 with an exclusive BOGO deal aimed at pairing the restaurant’s classic fried chicken with — wait for it — caviar. On New Year’s Eve, KFC Rewards Program members will be able to order takeout or delivery on a BOGO 8-piece Fried Chicken Bucket (dark meat only) for their festive holiday feast.
In addition to the dark meat bucket, KFC is also encouraging fans to pair their fried chicken with NYE sparkling wine and fresh caviar, all deliberately designed to be part of KFC’s “high-low” pairing for the holiday season.
The beloved fast-food brand also made headlines recently when it opened its "most ambitious" flagship store. Following the success of its Prague store opening last year, KFC has now set up shop in Rome not very far from one of the city’s most iconic landmarks: the Trevi Fountain.
It comes as part of the company’s “bold” growth plan, which aims to double the number of KFC restaurants in Europe within the next five years.
