Giving Claudia Winkleman a BBC chat show is desperate and lazy

The Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman era of Strictly hasn’t been dead for a week yet, but the BBC has already moved on. While we are still waiting with bated breath to hear what supplements or shampoo Tess might flog on her Instagram next, we now at least know what Claudia (everyone’s favourite, let’s be honest) will sink her impossibly white teeth into next.

Is it a brand new game format that will change how TV works forever a la The Traitors? Or a family-friendly, genuinely touching competition that will capture the hearts of the nation like The Piano? Nope, it’s a chat show. How disappointing.

The Claudia Winkleman Show will be on BBC One from next spring, promising “the biggest names from the worlds of film, television, music and beyond to her sofa for lively conversation with the help of a studio audience”. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it already exists: The Graham Norton Show has been doing the exact same thing for the last 18 years. Claudia’s show will even be made by the same production company. I won’t be surprised if they end up using the same set.

Claudia getting her own chat show was an inevitability post-Strictly. Over the past few years, she’s elevated herself from that funny woman with the fringe to a bona fide national treasure. In some ways, her popularity is a happy by-product of the phenomenal success of The Traitors, but in others it’s all down to Claudia as a character: her over-zealous eyeliner, her willingness to commit to the bit and authentic zaniness that only comes with her level of bearable poshness.

Plonking her on a sofa opposite stars against whom she can easily hold her own is a no-brainer. Which is why it’s such a dull, unimaginative move. Winkleman is made for fresh formats – her familiar face and deftness as a presenter are the golden ticket to convince audiences to give new shows a go. If The Traitors and The Piano are anything to go by, anything Claudia puts her name to has a decent chance of becoming a mega hit.

Meanwhile, Graham is doing the opposite. When he’s not quizzing celebs next year, he’ll be hosting ITV’s new game show The Neighbourhood. It’s a bold, exciting concept that could really take off. It would if Claudia were involved.

Giving Claudia a flashy chat show isn’t just lazy – it’s desperate. I’m sure Claudia has the big streamers (and their deep pockets) knocking on her door, so the BBC will want to keep her on side with a dead cert. It’s not a one-way street, either; being a regular face on the national broadcaster gives Winkleman the sort of cultural capital that would be slowly eroded by any Netflix or Prime Video appearances. She didn’t get that MBE for nothing.

Yes, Claudia will make a fantastic chat show host. She has already proved she has the gravitas and control needed when she stood in for Graham earlier this year. But why waste her on a format that won’t make the most out of her? She’s the best TV presenter we’ve got – not just Graham Norton 2.0.
