WEBSTER, N.Y. — Hundreds of customers remain without power in Webster – including one neighborhood that was entirely cut off from main roads after a massive tree brought down power lines, blocking the street.
It happened near the intersection of Notre Dame Drive and Shoemaker Road, with lines down and roads closed all the way from Notre Dame Drive to Van Alstyne Road.
The tree and wires have since been moved, allowing access for neighbors, but power remains out for at least 80 customers in the neighborhood – with about 500 still without power throughout all of Webster.
“I can’t get my car out of the garage,” an unnamed neighbor said. “I’m stuck because there’s literally power lines across my driveway.”
The neighbor described the moment the tree fell, saying, “While my garage door is going up, I heard a boom and saw a flash in front of my eyes, and the power line snapped and the line to my house came down and there were sparks right in front of me. If I had been about 10 seconds earlier, I probably would have gotten electrocuted.”
Emily Staryszak, who lives on Coventry Drive, shared her experience. “This is so wild. I just got out of work and my husband called. We have no access to the neighborhood. I had some neighbors a couple blocks over drop me off here. So I’m parked at their house,” she said.
Lloyd Bach, another neighbor, expressed a personal loss as the tree that fell was planted by his father six decades ago. “I grew up in that house. It’s my mother’s house. My father actually built the house back in 1957. The pin oak put it in there in 1967,” Bach said. “I guess if there’s anything fortunate it didn’t hit anyone’s house or take out anyone’s car.”
According to RG&E’s website, the estimated time for power restoration in the area is 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
