Two weeks after acclaimed actor/director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were killed in their Los Angeles home on Dec. 14, actor Cary Elwes has shared a deeply personal tribute reflecting on their lives, their love, and the bond he formed with Reiner while making The Princess Bride.

'Enough time has passed that I can finally put my grief into words'
Elwes wrote that he was 24 when he first met Reiner on The Princess Bride, and that from their first meeting, something clicked.
“I was 24 when I first met Rob Reiner on The Princess Bride. And from that very first meeting I fell in love with him," wrote Elwes.
He described Reiner as a filmmaker who “wore his heart on his sleeve,” someone who cared far more about kindness than status.
The first thing I noticed about Rob was that he wore his heart on his sleeve. This was a man who felt deeply. Whose heart was filled with love and compassion. He wasn’t impressed by how much money you had or if you had a privileged upbringing. He just wanted to know if you were a “good guy.” He always tried to find the best in people.

Elwes said Reiner loved making movies, but valued the experience of creating them even more, writing, "Once the movie is released, it belongs to other people. But while you are making it, that’s your time on the planet, so you wanna make it good.”
Reflecting on The Princess Bride, Elwes wrote, “I can’t remember a single day without laughter. The movie is about love, loyalty and sacrifice. Things that Rob held dear.”
Elwes also paid tribute to Michele Singer Reiner, noting that Rob met her while making When Harry Met Sally… and that their partnership was extraordinary.
“Besides being a gifted photographer, she was an incredibly loving, intelligent person. Deeply passionate about her family and about lifting others up.”

He added that Rob and Michele’s interest in fame was rooted in service, not attention.
“Their only interest in fame was that it allowed them to shine a light on causes they believed in, especially helping those who were marginalized.”
Elwes said humor was essential to Reiner, and that making him laugh felt like a gift.
“If I could make him laugh in return, I felt like I had won the lottery. His laugh was one of the greatest sounds I’ve ever known—so heartfelt it still rings in my ears.”
The tribute closed with a line that echoed The Princess Bride itself, blending love, loss, and gratitude.

Authorities have said the couple were victims of homicide. Their daughter Romy Reiner discovered them in their Los Angeles area home. The Reiners’ son Nick Reiner has since been arrested and booked on murder charges and is being held without bail.
