HILTON, N.Y. — A partial roof collapse at the Hilton East Assisted Living Facility led to the evacuation of 131 residents on Sunday night. A water leak caused by rapid snow melt overloaded the building’s drain system, resulting in the collapse, officials said.

More than 50 responders worked for nearly five hours to safely evacuate all residents. Hilton Fire Department Deputy Chief Dave Maggio said the response was well-coordinated, noting the teamwork among the agencies involved.
“If you were there not knowing what was happening and watching, you would have thought that we’ve all trained together before,” Maggio said.
Residents were moved to Quest Elementary School, which was designated as a shelter area due to its accessibility. Maggio said the school was an ideal location as it only has one level, making it accessible for everyone.
Crews took about three hours to load residents onto buses. Maggio explained the process involved assessing residents’ needs, including those on oxygen or using wheelchairs and walkers.
“So we were trying to get count of how many residents were on oxygen, how many residents were in wheelchairs, how many were, that used walkers. How many were able to walk without help?” Maggio said.
On Monday afternoon, Paul Davis Restoration crews were on site working on water removal. The Department of Health and Hilton East Assisted Living are collaborating to find temporary housing for the displaced residents. News10NBC reached out to the Department of Health for more information but has not received a response.
Maggio confirmed there is no structural damage to the building. Once the drying process is complete, it will be up to the facility’s owners to repair the roof.
The daughter of a resident said facility workers are delivering personal belongings to residents at their temporary lodgings. News10NBC also reached out to the facility but did not receive a response.
