Eric Dane's ex, Rebecca Gayheart, opened up about his battle with ALS in an emotional letter for The Cut, revealing the one "positive" aspect of his health battle.
"Spending all this time together, it’s all been really positive, and I think it’s nice for the kids to see maybe a softer side of us," Gayheart—who shares 15-year-old Billie and 13-year-old Georgia with the Grey's Anatomy star—explained in a letter published Monday, December 29. "It’s not that they have the hopes of us being together — kids always dream of their parents getting back together, and I think now ours don’t because they understand the reality of the situation. And hopefully, what they see instead are two adults who are trying to be mature and focus on what’s important."
The couple, who met in 2003, were married for nearly 15 years before separating in 2017.
"We separated, but we never got a divorce; we were about to and then we didn’t. We haven’t lived in the same home for eight years," she continued. "He’s dated other people, I’ve dated someone. It’s a very complicated relationship, one that’s confusing for people. Our love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love."
Gayheart added that she and the girls often "drop by" Dane's home, which is just a 12-minute drive away from their house.
"This year, the girls and I have spent a lot of time at Eric’s house...We have a lot of meals together," she wrote. "We wanna take advantage of the time that he has right now. He made it very clear that he wants to spend time with his family as much as possible, and I am committed to facilitating that."
Dane went public with his diagnosis during an interview with Diane Sawyer in April.
"I am trying very much to help my kids, Eric, myself, all of us to get through this knowing that death is a part of the life cycle," she continued, adding that she and Dane have "touched on" the topic of the future. "And in this case, we are very unlucky in many, many ways. But we’re also blessed in that we know that time is the most valuable thing, and we can use it wisely."
