The actor talked to director Cameron Crowe about his concerns and insisted on one thing before committing to play the now iconic role. Cusack told Crowe he would only say yes to the film "If I can rewrite the part with you."
Apparently, Cusack noted, he fully expected his request to be rejected. Instead, however, he received a "Yes, okay" from Crowe and the creative team.
Not only did Cusack feel that the wording for his character was off, but he also felt the vibe as a whole needed to shift. "The character was more optimistic, but didn't have any darker sides to it," the actor recalled.
What Cusack wanted, he explained, was to shift the character so that he was "choosing to be optimistic." Cusack felt that change led to Lloyd seeming "sort of heroic."
Cusack and Crowe worked together closely throughout the project. "We would just sort of bond over different music and songs," Cusack recalled.
He added that he would "always pick out music for a scene," and then "I would try to keep the vibe with that scene put into the film."
As iconic as Say Anything became, Cusack admitted he was "lucky that I never had the desire, or no one asked me to do any sequels."
