Truss ‘worked hard’ to help activist she criticises Starmer for welcoming to UK

Former Prime Minister Liz Truss is among a growing number of Conservatives calling for a British-Egyptian activist to be deported from the UK – despite having campaigned for his release from an Egyptian prison.

Truss has criticised Sir Keir Starmer for welcoming Alaa Abd el-Fattah’s return to the UK, following the discovery of social media posts by the democracy activist calling for Zionists to be killed.

“The el-Fattah case shows the way that the human-rights/NGO industrial complex has completely captured the British state,” Truss posted on X on Sunday.

She added: “The big failure of the Conservative Government was to not repeal the laws and replace the bureaucrats on day 1.”

Fattah has apologised for the historic tweets which resurfaced as he arrived in the UK this week. He was released after campaigning by successive UK governments following his conviction in 2021 for “spreading fake news” in Egypt.

A blame game has erupted in Westminster over how Starmer ended up saying he was “delighted” to welcome Fattah to the UK despite old social media posts in which he encouraged violence against police, and said he “hates” white people.

But politicians from all parties have also been criticised. Former Tory PM Boris Johnson, along with his successors Truss and Rishi Sunak vocally campaigned for his release from detention in Egypt, as did David Jones, a former Conservative who defected to Reform.

After the Fattah’s tweets resurfaced, Tory shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick said the activist should “be made to live in Egypt or frankly anywhere else in the world”.

He also criticised the move to grant Fattah citizenship – something that took place in 2021 when the Conservatives were in power. By 2022, Jenrick was Immigration Minister as the Conservative government said it was seeking to secure the activist’s release.

However, Truss’ comments are in stark contrast to her words in Parliament three years ago, where she told MPs of her support towards Fatta.

In June 2022, she told the House of Commons: “We’re working very hard to secure his release… I am seeking a meeting with the Egyptian foreign minister, he’s due to visit the United Kingdom shortly, and I’ll be raising his case.”

Fattah arrived in England after being held in a jail, on and off, for 10 years for publicly criticising the Egyptian government and becoming a prominent voice during the uprising that saw the fall Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak.

Sir Keir Starmer said last week: “Alaa’s case has been a top priority for my government since we came to office. I’m grateful to President Sisi for his decision to grant the pardon.”

It is understood he was unaware of Fattah’s social media posts until this week which the government has now described as “abhorrent”.

Most of the posts were written between 2010 and 2012 during the Arab spring, including one in which he appears to say: “I am a racist, I don’t like white people”. In another, he writes “killing any colonialists and specially Zionists heroic, we need to kill more of them”.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch urged the Home Secretary to examine whether Fattah’s citizenship could be revoked. Badenoch was Minister of State for local government, faith and communities when he was granted citizenship.

Iain Duncan Smith, another Conservative supporter said: “I do … regret signing the letter calling for the release of Fattah, given his views, that have since come to light, are utterly abhorrent”.

Most of Abd Fattah’s posts appear to be deleted, while others show some of his replies which are distasteful and harmful jokes.

He said on Monday: “I do understand how shocking and hurtful they are, and for that I unequivocally apologise.”

He added: “They were mostly expressions of a young man’s anger and frustrations in a time of regional crises (the wars on Iraq, on Lebanon and Gaza), and the rise of police brutality against Egyptian youth.”

The 44-year-old said some of his posts had been “completely twisted out of their meaning” and that he took allegations of antisemitism “very seriously”.

He added that he was “shaken” to have had the tweets resurface just as he has been freed and reunited with his family after 12 years.
