Hundreds of popular items sold under recognizable brand names in small grocery stores and markets across Indiana and Minnesota are being recalled after it was found they may be contaminated with Salmonella and “filth” like rodent, bird and insect droppings, according to a release from the Food and Drug Administration.
Minnesota-based Gold Star Distribution LLC, a wholesale distributor of products like over-the-counter medication, popular packaged snacks, cosmetic goods and pet food, issued the recall Dec. 26 “due to the presence of rodent and aviation contamination” at their Minneapolis facility.
The FDA said the distribution center was operating under “insanitary conditions, including the presence of rodent excreta, rodent urine, and bird droppings in areas where medical devices, drugs, human food, pet food, and cosmetic products were held.”
“These conditions create a significant risk that products held at the facility may have been contaminated with filth and harmful microorganisms,” the FDA said.
No illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA said, but consumers who purchased the items were advised to “destroy the products as soon as possible.” Gold Star will provide refunds upon request, the release said.
The sweeping recall applies to nearly 2,000 products that were distributed to more than 50 food stores and markets in Minnesota, Indiana and North Dakota, including gas stations and at least one day care center. The impacted products include everything from jars of JIF Peanut Butter, to cans of Pringles and boxes of Advil, Tylenol, Excedrin, Benadryl and Alka-Seltzer.
It also includes basic pantry items like basmati rice, ramen, saltines, Ortega taco sauce and shells, cereal, baby formula and popular candies like Skittles, Haribo gummy bears, Twix, Snickers, Reeses and more.
