Russell Hantz is back with another controversial Cameo video, and, as usual, it's causing division amongst Survivor fans. In a December video, the notorious villain said he believed the show is "going down the tubes," and brought up one of his more intense moves from Heroes Vs. Villains in 2010.
"I want [Survivor] to succeed, but it looks like, to me, it's not going to happen," said the four-time player and two-time finalist. "Ever since I left, everybody tries... to be like me, but it's like a wax version of who I am."

Hantz went on to recall the time during Heroes Vs. Villains when Boston Rob Mariano "tried to put [him] on the spot" by asking "who should we vote off?" in front of Sandra Diaz-Twine and Courtney Yates. "I'm like, 'One of these two right here.'"
In the actual clip, Hantz points to Diaz-Twine and Yates right in front of them and says, "I think we need to weed off the weak." "Who do you suggest?" Mariano asks, and Hantz says, "one of these," leaving Mariano speechless.

During his first season on Survivor Samoa in 2009, Hantz came in second place, ultimately losing to Natalie White. When he returned for Heroes Vs. Villains one year later, he came in third place behind Diaz-Twine and Parvati Shallow, and when he returned for Redemption Island in 2011, he was voted out much more quickly, coming in 17th. He made one last comeback for Australian Survivor in 2018, but was voted out immediately.

Survivor has changed a lot since Hantz last played, shortening the length of the show from 39 to 23 days and adding a slew of new advantages. However, no one's gameplay in the modern era has compared to the brutality of Hantz's. While some fans loved his wild antics, others hate him even years later.
"I mean Russell got absolutely screwed when Natalie beat him, she did nothing to win that season. He just suffered from a bitter jury," said one supporter, while another agreed, "Everyone is so salty towards him, but were you not entertained?!?! In the end, it is a TV show." "Top 5 players of all time… not even a question," said a third.

On the other hand, one said, "That move worked out so well for him, considering [checks notes] one of those two people ended up wiping the floor with him and taking home the million dollars." Another added, "I’m so glad to NOT have Russell on Survivor anymore." A third wrote, "If you played the best, you would have won. You never won Survivor mate. Let it go."

Even host Jeff Probst has mixed feelings about Hantz. “[My] least favorite [player] is probably one of the most popular, it would probably be Russell Hantz,” he told Live! With Kelly and Michael “Russell, I think you are a bad guy, but I hope you’ll come do the show again because you’re riveting to watch. [But] I don’t want him knowing where I live!”
