Obituary: Clyde Jones — Artist of Bynum, North Carolina

Submitted by Jef Lambdin

Clyde Jones, “The Critter Man,” a beloved artist and longtime resident of Bynum, North Carolina, passed away on December 24, 2025, leaving behind a rich legacy of creativity, generosity, and quiet influence. Known for his distinctive artistic voice with his sculptures and paintings, and deep connection to his community, Clyde’s work and spirit touched the lives of many.

An artist in the truest sense, Clyde approached his craft with curiosity, patience, and reverence for process. His work reflected a deep attentiveness to the world around him-its textures, histories, and both animal and human stories. Whether working independently in his studio or engaging with others, Clyde believed art was not only something to be made, but something to be shared.

Clyde was a familiar and cherished presence in Bynum. He could be found daily roaming the town on his riding lawnmower. He was part of a larger tradition of artists who understand community as both inspiration and responsibility. Friends, fellow artists, and neighbors remember him as thoughtful, observant, and quietly generous with his time and his art. He inspired others to look more closely, work more honestly, and trust their own creative instincts.

Beyond his paintings and critter sculptures, Clyde’s greatest contribution may have been the way he lived as an artist—steadfast, curious, and grounded in the moment. His conversations, creativity, humor and joy for life left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him.

Clyde Jones’s art remains as a testament to his life and vision, and his presence will continue to be felt in the creative spaces and shared memories of Bynum, the Triangle, North Carolina, and beyond. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Clyde is survived by his brother, Robert Jones, and his nieces and nephews, Loretta Brady, Marie Nordeck, Mark Velasquez, and Robert Earl Jones. He is predeceased by his mother, Hattie Dixon Jones; his father, James William Jones; his brother and sister, Jimmy and Dorothy; and his dog Speck.
