Who are the best FPL Challenge GW19 picks? Players will have their points doubled for all goals and assists this week. We use Opta data to find the top players to target in the Premier League.
The festive fun continues in this week’s edition of FPL Challenge, Double Celebration, with all players receiving double points for any goals and assists they contribute.
While this might sound like par for the course in terms of how you typically approach FPL, it is worth considering that by further enhancing the value of players who directly contribute to goals the most often, this theme effectively devalues other methods of accruing points as a result.
This means that clean sheets and defensive contributions – two areas that are typically most favourable to defenders – will take a backseat this week.
Given there are more defenders (three) than forwards (two) among the 10 highest scoring players in FPL this season, this should actually lead to a change in approach.
With this in mind, we are setting up with a 1-1-2-2 formation.
Goalkeeper
Dean Henderson: Crystal Palace vs Fulham (H)
We are expecting the majority of our points this week to come via attacking players from the league’s strongest teams, and as we can only pick one player per club, this means we will be looking further down the table for our choice of goalkeeper.
Crystal Palace are looking a little out of sorts at present with three consecutive league defeats, but they still rank fifth in the Premier League for expected goals conceded, and this puts Dean Henderson firmly in our sights.
Opponents Fulham, by contrast, have won their last three league games, but they have amassed only three shots on target from their two most recent matches, and they may find it hard to break Crystal Palace down here.
We’re ready to trust the data on this one.
Defender
Patrick Dorgu: Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers (H)
The prospect of owning a defender who could as a winger is simply too enticing to turn down, and Patrick Dorgu goes straight into our team as our only defender this week as a result.
With Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo busy at AFCON and Bruno Fernandes suffering from a hamstring injury, Dorgu was used much further forward in a new formation in Manchester United’s win against Newcastle on Boxing Day, and he was arguably the game’s standout performer.
As well as scoring the game’s only goal, Dorgu found the target with all three of his shots, quadrupling his tally for shots on target this season in the process.
Given his opponents this week are Wolves, who may well be the worst-performing team in Premier League history, Dorgu is a must-have.
Midfielders
Bukayo Saka: Arsenal vs Aston Villa (H)
Arsenal welcome Aston Villa to the Emirates Stadium this week, and Mikel Arteta’s side will be desperate to avenge their defeat in the reverse fixture at Villa Park earlier this month.
Villa are on the longest winning run of their history, with 11 successive victories, but this should only serve to motivate the Gunners even more as they seek to assert table dominance.
Bukayo Saka is the best attacking player for the second-best attack in the Premier League this season, contributing nine goals and assists in FPL (four goals, five FPL assists) despite what has been perceived by some to be a slow first half of the season.
Don’t be put off by Villa’s form – they have conceded nine goals across their last six games in all competitions, and this will be the toughest game of their season so far.
Cole Palmer: Chelsea vs Bournemouth (H)
Opponents Bournemouth have conceded at least three goals in each of their last six away games in the Premier League, including exactly four goals in their two most recent matches on the road, against Man Utd and Brentford.
Cole Palmer is still finding his feet after making a stuttered return from a groin injury, but this is exactly the kind of contest he needs to rekindle his confidence in a World Cup year.
There have been three hat-tricks scored in the Premier League this season, and Bournemouth were on the receiving end of two of them: Jean Phillipe-Mateta for Crystal Palace in October, and Kevin Schade for Brentford last week.
Palmer is more than capable of adding to that list.

Erling Haaland: Manchester City vs Sunderland (A)
With goals and assists worth twice as many points as usual, the most productive scorer in Premier League history has to make a return to our team this week.
Erling Haaland blanked last time out against Nottingham Forest, and you could definitely make a case for the prospect of this week’s opponents, Sunderland, similarly frustrating the Norwegian.
After all, the Black Cats are one of just two teams yet to lose at home in the Premier League this season, along with league leaders Arsenal.
Be that as it may, the absences of Reinildo Mandava and Dan Ballard mean Sunderland’s defence is severely weakened, and Regis Le Bris’ side were fortunate to concede only one goal against Leeds last time out when giving up 2.2 expected goals.
Haaland has scored at least 10 more non-penalty goals than any other player in the Premier League this season. Don’t overthink it.
Hugo Ekitiké: Liverpool vs Leeds United (H)
A long way behind Haaland (18), but nonetheless joint-second in the top flight for non-penalty goals, is Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitiké, with eight.
It’s an impressive return for a 23-year-old with 12 starts to his name in what is his first season in English football, and the Frenchman has been one of the few positives for Liverpool in what has been a torrid campaign so far for the Reds.
They have a tough fixture this week against a revitalised Leeds United team who are unbeaten in five league matches, but Ekitiké scored twice in the space of three minutes in the reverse fixture, and his form has continued since.
His wonderful assist for Florian Wirtz last time out against Wolves served as a reminder that he can contribute much more than goals, too, and that makes him a dual threat this week.
GW19 Honourable Mentions
Keane Lewis-Potter is another player, in addition to Dorgu, who is currently playing as a winger despite being categorised as a defender in FPL. He blanked last time out against Bournemouth, but he netted twice in his previous match against Wolves.
Rayan Cherki is one of the Premier League’s form players at the moment, and his incredible rate of 1.26 goals and assists per 90 minutes in the league this season would make him a definitive pick if not for Haaland.
Matheus Cunha wasn’t at his best against Newcastle, but he’s still looking incredibly dangerous of late, with an astonishing 25 shots and eight chances created across his last four games. He faces his former club Wolves at Old Trafford.
