‘Stranger Things’ Creators Reassure Fans Ahead of the Series Finale

Stranger Things Season 5 has been pretty much all anyone can talk about since Volume 1 premiered on November 26, and now that we’re just days away from the series finale, Ross and Matt Duffer have some advice for fans as they head into Hawkins once last time.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Stranger Things Season 5 Volumes 1 and 2.

While almost all viewers expected to suffer through a little heartbreak on Christmas Day with one of their favorites dying in volume 2, it didn’t happen. Not a single main character bit the dust, and that’s made more than a few people uneasy heading into the finale.

“It’s (an) emotional ending to the show for a variety of factors. But I don’t want to say too much,” Ross said during an interview with Today.com published on December 25. “I want people to brace themselves as they go into the finale. But I can promise you it’s not a 'Red Wedding' situation, like from Game of Thrones. We’re not gonna wipe out eight of our characters.”

For those not familiar with the “Red Wedding,” the phrase refers to one of the most infamous moments in Game of Thrones, when a major wedding celebration unexpectedly turns into a brutal massacre. The episode, which aired in 2013, shocked viewers by killing off several central characters in rapid succession, fundamentally changing the course of the series and earning a reputation as one of the most devastating plot twists in television history.

Matt assured fans that he and Ross “did nothing for shock value” during the finale, adding, “It’ll be easier to talk about once it comes out.”

A huge portion of fans are worried about Steve Harrington, played by Joe Keery, dying in the finale, and the Duffer Brothers certainly didn’t help their case when they appeared on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.

When Fallon asked them to arrange a group of FunkoPops that gave fans a hint at the finale, they balanced the figurine of Steve precariously close to the edge before giving it a quick tap that had him toppling from the desk. Some believe that they were hinting at Steve’s fate.

Thankfully, we’re less than a week away from knowing how it all ends.

The Stranger Things series finale premieres on Netflix at 8 p.m. ET on New Years Day.
