When the Brigitte Bardot Foundation released a statement on December 28, announcing the death of its founder, iconic French actress Brigitte Bardot, many were shocked.
It was just weeks ago that the charity sent out a different message when, on November 30, it reminded fans that the 91-year-old Bardot wasn't dying, but was still recovering from surgery.
"She would like people to have the delicacy to respect her privacy, and invites everyone to calm down," the statement read.
While notable figures such as French President Emmanuel Macron and French actor Pierre Arditi wrote tributes, none have mourned her death as much as groups like the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and similar organizations.
“The Brigitte Bardot Foundation would like to salute the memory of an exceptional woman who gave everything and gave up everything for a more respectful world for animals," PETA wrote.
Her passion for animal rights was as legendary as she was. Even her last social media post was singularly focused on finding homes for dogs and cats.
On December 27, the Brigitte Bardot Foundation released an Instagram video about a 2 1/2-year-old Doberman pinscher named Urphe. The caption says the affectionate dog has neck joint issues caused by "widespread severe osteoarthritis," putting him at risk of paralysis.
"The Foundation is urgently looking for a family," the post continued. "A family that wants to give a chance to a doomed dog whose health is deteriorating."
In the video, Urphe is seen snuggling up to a woman who appears to be Bardot, who scratches and pets him in response.

"Thank you for the thousandth time to the Brigitte Bardot Foundation," commented one person.
"A prayer for the mother of animals,' wrote another.
In 1986, Bardot retired from acting, choosing instead to spend the rest of her life fighting animal cruelty.
"I gave my beauty and my youth to men," she said (via BBC). "I'm going to give my wisdom and experience to animals."
However, while some groups focused on laboratory or companion animals, Bardot's foundation fought for all creatures. It condemned the killing of seal pups and urged a ban on fur. It lobbied for animals to be stunned before being slaughtered, and raised money for the retirement of two circus elephants. While she also became an extremely controversial figure because of her far-right views, there's no doubt that she did much to advance animal rights worldwide.
