French icon and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot died at age 91 on Sunday, December 28, her animal rights foundation announced.
"The Brigitte Bardot Foundation announces with great sadness the death of its Founder and President, Madame Brigitte Bardot, internationally-renowned actress and singer, who chose to abandon her prestigious career to devote her life and energy to animal protection and to her Foundation," the organization announced. "The Brigitte Bardot Foundation would like to salute the memory of an exceptional woman who gave everything and gave up everything for a more respectful world for animals."
Shortly after news of her death was announced, PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk released a tribute to the late activist.

The beloved model was last seen in 2024, celebrating her 90th birthday in Saint-Tropez, France.
She retired from acting in 1973, at just 39 years old, in order to focus on animal activism. In 1986, she launched the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals.
