Chance of severe weather, snow both in Chicago forecast to start week

Sunday could be an eventful weather day in the Chicago area, with chances of strong-to-severe thunderstorms and snow both in the forecast.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, parts of the Chicago area, especially south of Interstate 80, are at a “marginal” risk of severe weather on Sunday, the first of five levels of severe storm threats. Eastern Kankakee County, as well as a wide swath of Indiana, are at a “slight” risk, the next step up on the risk scale.

According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, the main threats with any severe weather that develops would be damaging wind gusts, though there is also a non-zero chance of tornadoes with any storms that develop, according to forecast models.

Those storms could be fueled by temperatures that will be well above average, with highs in the upper-50s and even the low-60s across some parts of the area, nearly 30 degrees above seasonal averages.

Forecast models say those temperatures will be accompanied by frequent rain showers, with the possibility of thunderstorms rising in the late morning and into the afternoon hours, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.

By Monday morning, some parts of the area could see anywhere from one-half inch to an inch of rainfall, but things are going to change quickly as a cold front sweeps across the area late Sunday evening.

That front will usher in gusty winds, with a wind advisory issued for the entire Chicago area beginning at 6 p.m. on Sunday and running through most of the day Monday. Wind gusts could exceed 50 miles per hour at times, blowing around unsecured objects, making travel on north-south roadways difficult for high-profile vehicles, and even potentially causing limited power outages.

The winds could also be accompanied by some blowing snow, as precipitation is expected to transition from rain to snow as the cold front causes temperatures to plummet late Sunday and into Monday morning.

In fact, by Monday morning wind chills could drop below zero, a radical change that could also lead to some flash freezing on untreated surfaces like elevated roadways and sidewalks, according to forecast models.

By the time the Monday morning commute ends, some parts of the Chicago area may see up to an inch of snow, though more accumulations could occur near the Wisconsin-Illinois border and in northwest Indiana, where winds off Lake Michigan could cause some particularly heavy snow squalls to develop.

High temperatures Monday will be decidedly lower than this weekend, with readings only reaching into the low-to-mid 20s, according to forecast models.

Temperatures will stabilize during the week to follow, with another chance of snow potentially looming in the forecast on Wednesday.

By Thursday, temperatures will be back in the upper-20s and low-30s, where they are expected to remain into the start of January, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
