‘90s Heavy Metal Icon Marks Seven Years Sober: ‘Recovery is Possible’

Lamb of God member Mark Morton celebrated a major personal milestone with a heartwarming reflection.

The guitarist is known for his high-octane performances and complex riffs, along with the powerful vocals of frontman Randy Blythe, making it easy to assume that the heavy metal group embodies the full rock star lifestyle.

However, Morton later experienced a profound shift in perspective, embracing a sober life defined by clarity, resilience, growth and a renewed sense of purpose.

As he celebrates sobriety, he delivered a touching message not only to his fans but also as a reminder that nothing is impossible.

In an Instagram update, the 53-year-old commemorates a special achievement of living drug- and alcohol-free for seven years. Moreover, he also shared how recovery unfolded slowly, “one day at a time.”

“This morning I woke up 7 years clean & sober. I genuinely owe my life to the addicts & alcoholics in recovery who taught me how to free from addiction…one day at a time. I’ve been asked….Why still focus on it? Why count time? Why not just be sober and move on? Fair questions…Here’s why…” he wrote.

According to him, the loss of loved ones to drugs and alcohol became a deeply personal wake-up call.

“Right now, there are countless people out there who have lost all hope that they can live a life without drugs or alcohol. I know this to be true because I was one of them. So when I talk about getting sober, it’s never to solicit “congratulations” or to suggest that anyone else should. It’s so that one person might hear that recovery IS possible for all who seek it,” he added.

Lastly, he hopes his story will spark hope in those who are struggling like him before and also offer encouragement that choosing sobriety is ultimately rewarding and life-changing.

“Someone out there right now needs to hear that message & I hope they do. I was that person.

If I can do it, you can too…I promise it’s worth it,” he said.

The touching post drew attention from fans who congratulated him on his continued journey.

“Each day sober is an accomplishment and 7 years of that is wonderful. Congrats! Thank you for being vulnerable enough to share this. You never know who needs to hear/see/read if,” a follower said.

“Doing the work and living the truth of it all is what it’s all about. One day at a time,” another added.

Fellow musicians like Gary Holt of Exodus expressed admiration, noting, “Congratulations brother! And yes, I still count and do a daily affirmation. Whatever works.”

The same goes for former Whitesnake guitarist Doug Aldrich, who echoed, “That’s such a great post, man:) God Bless Mark.”

Morton’s sobriety was also reflected in his book Desolation: A Heavy Metal Memoir, where he credited Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash for helping him on his journey and making "sobriety look cool.”
