ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Kwanzaa Coalition transformed City Hall’s atrium into a vibrant space filled with music and dancing to mark the first day of Kwanzaa Friday, a week-long celebration of African-American culture and heritage.
The first day of Kwanzaa focuses on Umoja, or unity, one of the seven guiding principles that also include self-determination, creativity, and faith. The celebration continues through New Year’s Day.
The Pan-African holiday celebrates a different principle each day. It aims to highlight the history and culture of people of African descent, past and present.
The Rochester community is celebrating with events throughout the seven days.
