Planning to recycle your Christmas tree? Here are the 27 dropoff sites across Chicago

Now that Christmas is in the books, many celebrations are over and gifts are unwrapped, holiday decorations are beginning to come down.

For Chicagoans wondering what to do with your Christmas tree, it doesn’t have to be dismantled just yet. The city’s annual Holiday Tree Recycling Program, in which natural trees are accepted at 27 locations across Chicago, doesn’t get underway until Jan. 3.

Residents are asked to remove all tinsel, lights, ornaments, tree stands, and plastic bags before placing trees in a designated corral at each location. According to the city of Chicago website, thousands of trees are diverted from landfills each year and turned into tree mulch for residents and parks.
