Manchester United 1-0 Newcastle Stats: Red Devils Seal More Boxing Day Success Thanks to Dorgu Stunner

A Patrick Dorgu volley was enough for Manchester United to defeat Newcastle 1-0 at Old Trafford, as the Red Devils move up to fifth in the Premier League table.

Manchester United secured a 1-0 win over Newcastle United in their clash at Old Trafford on Boxing Day. Patrick Dorgu’s excellent first-half volley – his first goal for the club – was enough to seal all three points for the home side, but they had to fend off a series of Newcastle attacks in the second half to do so.

Ruben Amorim hinted just before Christmas that he was thinking about changing the shape of his Manchester United side away from his staunch use of 3-4-2-1, and this was the match that he sprung the surprise.

Moving to a back four, with Luke Shaw moving to left-back, Dorgu was pushed further forward in a more attacking wing position on the right, switching sides from his usual left wing-back role.

It was a shift that paid off on 24 minutes, as Dorgu scored his first goal in a Man Utd shirt. After a corner was swung in from the left, Nick Woltemade’s poor attempt at a headed clearance looped up into the air and fell towards the edge of the box, where the Danish international met the ball with a superb volley into the corner of the net past a diving Aaron Ramsdale.

His debut goal for the Red Devils came in his 38th competitive appearance for the club, while it was his first club goal in over a year, last scoring for Lecce versus Venezia on 25 November 2024 in Serie A.

Before tonight, United had never lost a Premier League game against Newcastle in which they netted the opening goal, winning 23 and drawing six of the 29 such matches.

Of course, another well-reported United record is that they’ve not lost a league game at Old Trafford that they’ve led at half-time since May 1984 versus Ipswich Town. That record nearly came under threat in their last Premier League home game, after Bournemouth came from behind at the break before eventually drawing 4-4.

An enforced half-time change saw the increasingly reliable Mason Mount withdrawn and Jack Fletcher – son of former midfielder Darren – replace him for his Premier League home debut. Already without influential captain Bruno Fernandes for the next few matches following his injury last weekend at Aston Villa, United will hope Mount’s substitution was precautionary rather than anything serious.

Benjamin Sesko came close to doubling United’s lead on the hour mark, after some good footwork saw him evade a challenge before smashing a shot against the crossbar. It would be his final act, as he was replaced by Joshua Zirkzee just seconds later. That substitution was one of two on 60 minutes, with Casemiro surprisingly replaced by Leny Yoro as Amorim changed shape and system to try and prevent an equaliser.

That equaliser almost came on 62 minutes, with Lewis Hall’s superb long-range strike hitting the crossbar at the other end of the pitch, before seeing another shot well saved by Senne Lammens only 15 seconds later. United’s substitutions saw them lose control of the game, and Anthony Gordon came close to scoring minutes later, but his low shot flew across goal and past the far post when well placed to find the back of the net.

Diogo Dalot took advantage of Hall switching off from a set-piece, with Lisandro Martínez’s free-kick inside his own hall floated over the Magpies backline to the Portuguese, who brought the ball down well and found himself bearing down on Ramsdale, only to fire over the bar when he should have at least found the target.

United went on to survive Newcastle pressure in the final 10 minutes to record their fourth Premier League Boxing Day game against Newcastle, with all three coming under different managers – 4-3 in 2012 (Ferguson), 3-1 in 2014 (van Gaal) and 4-1 in 2019 (Solskjaer) and tonight (Amorim).

It was also Manchester United’s 23rd Premier League win on Boxing Day, extending their own competition record, while Newcastle added to their own competition record of losing the most often on Boxing Day (now 17 defeats).

Manchester United 1-0 Newcastle Post-Match Stats

After only winning four of their first 14 home Premier League games under Ruben Amorim (D2 L8), Manchester United have since won five of their last eight league fixtures at Old Trafford (D2 L1). Newcastle United have won just one of their last 12 away league games (D4 L7), a 4-1 victory at Everton in November. In fact, since the first game in this period (1-4 defeat at Aston Villa on 19 April), the only ever-present Premier League side with fewer away points than the Magpies (7) are Wolves (4). Man Utd won a Premier League game in which Bruno Fernandes did not feature for the first time since a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur in March 2022 under Ralf Rangnick. The Red Devils had lost five of their last six league games without the midfielder between that match and today (D1). Manchester United had just 33.4% possession in this game, their lowest in a Premier League game this season, and their lowest in a league match that they won since January 2023 against Manchester City (29.4%). For the first time under Ruben Amorim, Manchester United started a Premier League game with a back four formation – last doing so in November 2024 versus Leicester City, in their final game before Amorim arrived.
