Although Stranger Things started with a romance between Nancy and Steve, the couple ultimately broke up, in part because Nancy's guilt over the death of her best friend, Barb, proved too intense while she was with Steve.
In season 2, Nancy and Jonathan became official, and despite some bumps in the road, the two have remained linked ever since. Even after season 4 heavily hinted that the two were about to call it quits, their romance was going strong enough at the start of season 5 that Jonathan (shockingly, and somewhat bewilderingly given his avoidant behavior in season 4) had purchased an engagement ring.
That ring was finally presented to Nancy in Volume 2, in the most dire of circumstances. As Nancy and Jonathan are trapped in a room with a broken door and no other exit, with a bizarre, terrifying goo pouring in all around them, Jonathan and Nancy begin confessing to various secrets.
This includes myriad things, from Jonathan admitting he'd never actually applied to Emerson (his plan with Nancy to attend the same college) to Nancy revealing that she didn't like The Clash. Believing they are about to die, Jonathan concludes these confessions by revealing the ring and "un-proposing" to Nancy.
While Jonathan saying "Will you not marry me" may seem straightforward enough, the two also declare their love for one another and embrace, causing some viewers to question whether Jonathan phrased it this way because he believed they were going to die, not because he wanted to call it quits.
Speaking to People, however, the Duffer Brothers have confirmed that this un-proposal was indeed Nancy and Jonathan breaking up. "That's a breakup," Matt Duffer said. "They are broken up."
This confirmation has come as a shock to some viewers, who had interpreted this scene between Jonathan and Nancy to mean that they were not ready to get married but weren't fully ending their relationship, either.

♬ original sound - ??????????? ??Ultimately, as the Duffers themselves have articulated, Nancy and Jonathan's relationship was one built upon shared trauma, so while they do truly love one another, they felt stifled by and tied to that trauma while they were together.
Likewise, the Duffer Brothers shared with People that they wanted a more independent path for Nancy, rather than a conclusion in which she ends up with either Jonathan or Steve. While there's still one more Stranger Things episode left, it seems Nancy will be ending the show single (assuming that she survives).
