Things appear to be moving quickly between Michigan and outgoing Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham.
According to a report from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, Michigan officials expect to finalize negotiations on a deal by the end of the day on Friday. There is an expectation that Whittingham will join the Michigan team in Orlando for its bowl game against Texas.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel went on SportsCenter Friday afternoon and reported that there is an “urgency” from Whittingham to connect with his new Michigan team ahead of the Citrus Bowl. That would, however, put him at odds with the exit plan put in place at Utah.
When the Utes announced earlier this month that he would be stepping down, the plan was for Whittingham to coach the team one final time in the Las Vegas Bowl against Nebraska on Dec. 31. If Whittingham accepts the Michigan job, ESPN’s Dan Wetzel reported that U-M would expect his attention to “immediately shift” to roster-building ahead of the Jan. 2 transfer portal opening.
ESPN reported early Friday morning that Whittingham had emerged as the primary focus of the Michigan coaching search.
Utah and Whittingham announced on Dec. 12 that he would step down after the team’s bowl game, ending a 21-year tenure as the school’s head coach. Whittingham, 66, succeeded Urban Meyer after he left to take the Florida job, helped Utah’s football program through 2 conference switches, was a 3-time conference Coach of the Year, won 11 bowl games, and led the Utes to a 177-88 record.
Whittingham led the Utes to Pac-12 championships and Rose Bowl appearances in 2021 and 2022. He also helped the program to a Sugar Bowl win over Nick Saban-led Alabama in 2008.
