Legendary Director Ends 13-Year Retirement for Stranger Things Season 5

The Duffer brothers convinced one of Hollywood’s most respected directors to come out of retirement for the final season. The Green Mile's Frank Darabont answered the call, binged the series, and signed on to direct two episodes of Stranger Things Season 5—calling the experience "one hell of a great time."

After a decade of stepping away from Hollywood big-screen projects, Darabont took a week to think about the Duffer brothers' offer to join the series. According to Variety, Dan Trachtenberg was set to direct two episodes before bowing out due to scheduling conflicts withPredator: Badlands.

Darabont revealed he and his wife are huge fans of the series when his agent called him to pass on a message about the Duffer brothers being admirers of his work. It led to a lunch meeting, and a call a week later to offer him to direct "The Turnbow Trap" and "Shock Jock."

"I hadn’t done it in a while, but they said it’s like riding a bicycle: You don’t forget. And they were right. From the first moment on set, there was nothing unfamiliar about the process for me, though it had been about 13 years. The one episode offer wound up being two episodes and six months in Atlanta. It was a hell of a great experience," he revealed.

Directing for Stranger Things marked Darabont's return to Hollywood after retiring 13 years ago to live a quiet life in Monterey, California, with his wife. Darabont made a name for himself by bringing to life Stephen King's The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist, and directing The Majestic. He also worked as a writer for The Blob, The Fly II, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

When it comes to TV, he worked on Tales from the Crypt, The Shield, was an executive producer for The Walking Dead, and Mob City.

He details how much has changed since he left Hollywood and the ability to continue filming instead of yelling "cut." The director also praised the Stranger Things cast for being "dialed in" from the get-go, seeing as they've played their characters for years.

WhetherStranger Things has changed his mind about returning to directing full-time, Darabont isn't so sure.

"I really do love being retired. However, I also love being on a set with creative people, as long as I’m not fighting battles with some evil empire, studio, or network. I bless Netflix for being so supportive. If you have a good situation like that and it can be about the creative process, then its a pleasure. So my longwinded answer winds up being, it depends," he said.
