Released as their 13th single, what some called “unlucky” has instead become one of the Carpenters’ most heartfelt love anthems.
"I Won't Last a Day Without You" was released on April 13, 1974. The album it hailed from, A Song For You, had come out two years earlier.
According to U Discover Music, A Song For You had already spawned three big hit singles: "Sing," "Yesterday Once More," and "Top of the World." Therefore, it seemed like a curious choice to release a fourth song, two years after the album's release.
“I Won’t Last A Day Without You," written by Paul Simon and Roger Nichols, was Karen and Richard Carpenter's first single since "Rainy Days and Mondays" (1971) to miss a spot in the Top 10. Therefore, the song could be considered unlucky as the siblings' next release, "Please Mr. Postman," reached No. 1 in January of 1975.

The songwriters previously penned “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “I Kept On Loving You,” and “Rainy Days and Mondays” for the brother and sister act. "We've Only Just Begun" and "Rainy Days and Mondays" topped the Billboard charts at No. 2, while "I Kept on Loving You" did not chart, but rather was the B-side of "Close to You," which was No. 1 in July 1970.
Karen's melodic voice was a cornerstone of the Carpenters' music. Richard's arrangements were made to perfectly suit his sister's pitch.
However, did either of them really understand the power of their teamwork? In an interview with NPR, Richard said they both "knew."
"I've been asked that plenty, and I've thought about it plenty. Karen, at once, could realize that she could do just about anything vocally. And when it came to recording, as far as punching in or anything, she just knew; the both of us knew, we can do that. So to me, Karen, at once, both knew just what an instrument she possessed and a gift."
Karen Carpenter died in February 1983. Richard Carpenter continues to keep the Carpenters’ legacy alive by curating their music, releasing posthumous collections, and occasionally performing.
