ROCHESTER, N.Y.
Christmas night will end quietly with some passing clouds and temperatures dropping to a chilly 18 degrees in Rochester. Low temperatures will stay in the upper-teens for most of western New York with higher elevations dropping to the mid-teens. Wind gusts from the day will be diminishing through the evening with sustained winds out of the north-northeast at 10 to 15 mph.
The News10NBC First Alert Weather Team has issued a Yellow Alert for Friday. This is for weather that will impact travel starting in the early afternoon and last through Friday evening. A low-pressure system currently entering the upper Great Lakes region will bring snow into Rochester starting around lunchtime on Friday. Over the last 24 hours, there has been much disagreement between weather models on how much snowfall the Rochester metro area will see. However, over the course of the last few data runs, we are starting to see a general consensus that snowfall for the Rochester area will likely stay between 2 and 6 inches.
Moving southwest through southern Erie County, Wyoming and Livingston Counties, precipitation type becomes more variable. However, sleet, lower accumulations of snow, and some freezing rain will all be possible for these counties. Further southwest into the Southern Tier, freezing rain is likely and those in Chautauqua County may see up to a half inch of freezing rain. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for all of western New York until 4:00 am on Saturday.
If you must travel on Friday, please use caution and plan accordingly. The early morning hours should be fine for travel, but this storm will quickly move into western New York by the lunch hour. Saturday will offer a better opportunity for travel. Though a brief lake effect band may be seen in the morning, this is expected to bring no travel impacts for Saturday and the rest of the day remains quiet.
