‘Christmas ruined’: Shoppers discover rotten turkeys and messed-up food deliveries

Supermarkets have been accused of ruining Christmas after shocked customers discovered their turkeys were rotten, smelly or out of date.

Angry shoppers also complained that the retail giants had messed up their online grocery orders – spoiling their Christmas Day dinner plans.

Social media users said their deliveries were missing turkey, chicken, beer and wine, or were cancelled entirely.

One Sainsbury’s shopper claimed they only discovered that their turkey was rotten and stinking when they opened it up on Christmas morning – despite a 27 December sell-by date.

“Thank you Sainsbury’s – a rotten turkey from your Longwater Norwich store, opened it up to a Christmas morning stench!” they posted on X.

“I’m certainly gonna ‘taste the difference’ with this!” they added.

Another Sainsbury’s customer claimed a turkey bought several days before Christmas had gone bad and smelled foul. It also had a 27 December sell-by date.

“No turkey for us today!” they posted on X. “The pictures really don’t portray how bad it smelt once we cut the packaging open. Very disappointed Sainsbury’s.”

A Tesco shopper claimed they bought two inedible turkeys from an Ealing Broadway store earlier in December.

After getting them out of the freezer for Christmas, they said they realised that the sell-by dates were for May and June this year.

“They are massively past their sell-by,” they wrote on X. “Ealing Broadway store should be fined for food hygiene failures.”

“I didn’t notice,” they added. “Not expecting turkeys on sale in December to be past their date.”

Others accused supermarkets of ruining their Christmas over failures to deliver on promised festive groceries ordered online.

One Morrisons customer said they had ordered a turkey by click and collect in November, but were turned away when they tried to pick it up in the days running up to Christmas.

“Waited for 1.5 hours to be told someone in store put all the click & collect orders out on shelves so no Turkey crowns left,” they posted on X.

They added: “Huge amount of upset customers left without their family Xmas dinner.”

Another shopper said beer they had ordered online from Morrisons for the Christmas period was missing from their delivery. They said they were left “very upset and angry”.

An Asda customer said their online order due to be delivered before Christmas had been cancelled. “Ruined my Christmas already!” they posed on X.

Another shopper said the same supermarket delivered a chicken that went out of date two days before Christmas Day – criticising the firm’s “awful service”.

One Tesco customer said they were “extremely disappointed to receive not a single bottle of wine that I’d ordered”. They posted on X: “I now have no wine for Christmas. Very poor service, Tesco, I expected better from you.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said they would be contacting “these customers who received a turkey that does not meet our usual high standards to say how sorry we are for this experience”. They added: “We’re looking into how this may have happened.”

A Morrisons spokesperson said: “We’re really sorry that this happened; we were in touch with this small number of customers to put it right before Christmas Day.”
