His Christmas message goes nowhere near as far as that of the new Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, who made explicit references to the debate over immigration in her sermon at St Paul’s Cathedral.
She said: “Many feel the weight of economic pressure. Some feel pushed to the margins. Our national conversations about immigration continue to divide us, when our common humanity should unite us.”
She will know that these forthright words will provoke some on the right who see the Church of England as having put its thumb on the scales in favour of progressive politics over the years.
Charles was more guarded – after all, no one can seriously argue that the division in society he warns against is a good thing that we need more of. But his praise of diversity and push for unity could start to prove increasingly tricky if Reform UK, the ultimate political disruptors who tend to argue that diversity has gone far enough, continue to fly high in the polls in years to come.
