While we may have Kenny Chesney's discography on repeat, the country crooner recently made a surprising revelation, as his favorite Top 3 albums of all time did not include a single one from the country genre.
There's plenty of promising country albums to choose from, but the "Summertime" singer told HowardStern in an interview, during which he promoted his memoir, "Heart Life Music," that he's actually a huge rock fan.
His favorite record, hands down, is a '60s rock classic, expressing, "I wasn't a huge Beach Boys fan, but I loved Pet Sounds. I love that record. I just love the harmonies. There was a moment where I got introduced to it and it just blew my mind."
Pet Sounds was released on May 16, 1966, as The Beach Boys’ eleventh studio album.
Next up on the list is his late friendJimmy Buffett’sA1A, a record Chesney praised for its storytelling.
"A1A," the fifth studio album by singer-songwriter, was released in Dec. 1974.
And while picking that third album was tough, Chesney eventually landed on Bruce Springsteen.
However, picking the top one proved even more difficult, as Chesney noted, "I would have to have Bruce [Springsteen] in there somewhere. I don't know which one. It would be hard not to have that voice in my life and that creative cell that he is."
After revealing his top 3 choices, he realized that there was nothing country in there, stating, "There would have to be a country record in there. If it was only three, God, that's hard."
In that same interview, the 57-year-old reflected on his musical journey, revealing that the first song he ever wrote was brutally rejected.
“The first song I ever wrote, I was in college,” Chesney shared. “And ironically enough, I was taking a persuasion class. And there was this hot girl sitting beside me. I was trying to persuade her all semester to pay attention to me on any level.”
He explained that he decided to write her a song, making the "mistake" of giving her the cassette on Thursday, so he had to wait all weekend to see if it would garner a response.
When he walked into class that following Tuesday, Chesney said he sat down and realized, “That girl is sitting as far back in the back corner from me as she possibly could.”
He called it his first "real rejection."
Thankfully, he overcame it, with his memoir recently reaching No. 1 on The New York Times Best Seller list.
