ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Merry Christmas!! It’s a green Christmas, and we’re green on the threat tracker. But that won’t be the case tomorrow as we are tracking widespread snowfall that will have an impact on travel.
Temperatures today will reach the mid to upper 30s amid mostly cloudy skies. A slight northerly breeze may help spark up some upslope flurries near the Finger Lakes in the afternoon, but otherwise dry conditions across the region. Tonight will still be mostly cloudy with temperatures down to the upper teens.
Tomorrow will be cold and mostly cloudy as an Alberta Clipper makes its way towards us. If you have to travel tomorrow, DO IT IN THE MORNING! Don’t wait until the afternoon, as that’s when the snow will move in. It will be heaviest in the late afternoon/early evening. There is still uncertainty in the exact snowfall amounts, mainly due to the placement of the system and the fact that there will likely be smaller, more intense bands of snowfall embedded within the larger, more widespread snow. It has been trending a little more north, which would put us closer to the sleet/freezing rain area and decrease our snowfall totals. Sleet and freezing rain is still only likely as far north as the southern tier and bottom edge of the Finger Lakes, however.
Temperatures will be in the low to mid 20s, which will help to make the snowfall lighter and fluffier. Farther to the southwest it will be slightly wetter and heavier near the changeover to sleet/freezing rain. Have decided to go with a more modest snowfall prediction at this time due to the recent northward trends… Rochester could still see half a foot, but at this moment it’s looking like it’ll be a little less than that. We will continue to track the system and give you updates, as it is still a ways away and there’s time for that snowfall forecast to change.
Saturday is good for travel, and so is MOST of Sunday. Rain enters the region late Sunday, with plummeting temperatures behind turning it to snow later Monday. Gusty winds , arctic air, and lake effect snow is forecasted for Monday and Tuesday.
Stay tuned for updates on tomorrow’s snow.
