Brentwood Middle School band director to march in 2026 Rose Parade

Brentwood Middle School band director Jennifer Daigle will march in the iconic Rose Parade in Pasadena on New Year’s Day.

Daigle is in her third year as the band director at Brentwood, but she has more than two decades of teaching experience.

She will join the Band Directors Marching Band, which consists of over 300 band directors from across North America and will accompany a colorful, animated float along the 5 1/2 mile parade route.

“I saw them march in the Macy’s (Thanksgiving Day) Parade on TV … years ago and I thought to myself, ‘I want to do that,’ ” Daigle said.

The Michael D. Sewell Memorial Foundation based in Ohio is sponsoring the band’s performance. The foundation was created to recognize the late Mike Sewell, who dedicated his life to community and school music programs in the Central Ohio area for nearly 40 years.

Daigle submitted an application to perform with the group in February. By that point, the band had already been finalized, but after a few people dropped out, Daigle was contacted in September to see if she was still interested. She seized the opportunity.

“I got the music in the beginning of October, and I have been memorizing it almost every day,” Daigle said. “I finally have it memorized.”

The marching band’s set list includes the songs “Seventy-Six Trombones,” “Strike up the Saints,” “Brand New Day” and “March Trio Medley.”

The band will be directed by nationally known music educator and band director Jon Waters, who will also lead rehearsals and other performances of the band in Pasadena.

Daigle will play a mellophone in the parade, which she described as “like a marching French horn.”

    “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Daigle said.

Brentwood Middle School Principal Nicole Petersen said Daigle’s scheduled performance in the Rose Parade is a source of pride for the entire school.

“For our students, this experience makes big dreams feel possible. They see that dedication, discipline and passion for music can lead to extraordinary opportunities,” Petersen said. “It elevates the importance of music education and reinforces that excellence is happening right here in our school every day.”

Because Daigle lives in a condo, she has not been able to rehearse for the parade in her home. Instead, she has been staying after school and practicing everyday.

The theme of the Saluting America’s Band Directors parade entry is “America’s Band Directors: We teach music. We teach life.”

“It’s a good way to … promote music education across the country and promote the arts,” Daigle said. “It’s a really nice testament to band directors and … how much hard work that they put in.”

The Rose Parade will be televised live beginning at 9 a.m. Mountain Standard Time.
