Swimmers rescued from sea in emergency incident off Devon coast

Swimmers have been rescued from the sea and pulled to shore at a Devon beach, as search efforts in the water continue.

Emergency services were called to the beach at Budleigh Salterton shortly after 10am on Thursday following “concern for people in the water”, Devon and Cornwall Police said in a statement.

“A number of people have been safely recovered to shore and will be checked by paramedics,” the statement added.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said Exmouth and Beer Coastguard Rescue teams, RNLI lifeboats, and coastguard search and rescue helicopters have been sent to the scene to assist, alongside police and the ambulance service.

Police urged people not to enter the water along the stretch of coast near Budleigh Salterton while the incident is ongoing.
