For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Polish swimmer Olivier Urbaniak, who was a semifinalist at the 2025 World Aquatics Junior Championships, is headed stateside next fall to swim for Virginia Tech University beginning in the fall of 2026.
“I am incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and academic journey at Virginia Tech! I’m beyond grateful to my family, friends, and my coaches for their constant support and guidance throughout this process. A special thank you to Coach Sergio, Coach Albert, and the entire VT coaching staff for believing in me and giving me this amazing opportunity. Can’t wait for what’s ahead! Go Hokies!!”
A member of the Polish Swimming Federation, Urbaniak currently trains with Youth Sports Club Trójka in Łódź, Poland. A versatile threat in the pool, he primarily specializes in the shorter distances of backstroke but also excels at free, fly and IM.
Urbaniak turned in a handful of top swims at the World Aquatics Junior Championships (LCM) over the summer, posting lifetime bests in two events. He made it to the semifinals in the 100 back, placing 9th in a personal best time of 55.16. He also placed 17th in the 50 back in a best time of 26.02, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the semifinals. Urbaniak helped Poland to an 8th-place finish in the boys’ 400 medley relay, leading off with an opening split of 56.20 on the backstroke leg.
A strong competitor in short course meters, Urbaniak kicked off the 2025-2026 SCM season in style by logging new best times in a number of events. At the Łódź Region Winter Championships (SCM) in November, he turned in four lifetime best performances. He won the 100 free (49.30) and 50 fly (23.94) and took the runner-up spot in the 50 free (22.82) and 100 fly (54.43).
Urbaniak recently wrapped up competing at the 2025 Polish Championships (SCM) in mid-December, where he posted two new best times. He placed 2nd in the 100 IM (53.57), 5th in the 100 back (52.45 – PB), 6th in the 50 back (24.05) and 11th in the 50 fly (23.51 – PB).
Earlier in the season, Urbaniak clocked new personal best times in the 50 back (24.54) at the PGE Grand Prix Polish Cup in October and in the 100 IM (53.31) at the Polish Open Championships in November.
Best Times SCM (SCY Conversion)
50 back – 24.05 (21.66) 100 back – 52.45 (47.25) 200 back – 1:57.79 (1:46.11) 50 free – 22.82 (20.55) 100 free – 49.30 (44.41) 100 fly – 54.43 (49.03)A Division I program, Virginia Tech competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference, with the men’s team placing 6th at the 2025 conference championships. The Hokies went on to send nine athletes to compete at the NCAA Division I Championships in March, where they finished 10th overall.
To earn a second swim at the 2025 ACC Championships, it took times of 19.41/42.78 in the 50/100 free, 46.71/1:42.64 in the 100/200 back and 46.21 in the 100 fly. Based on his converted times, Urbaniak would have been just outside the cutoff in the 100 back, meaning he could have a chance to sneak his way into the ‘C’ final next season. Given that his projected converted times are just his floor for next season, he could be even more competitive depending on how he transitions to yards.
On the team itself, Urbaniak would have ranked 4th in the 100 back, 6th in the 200 back and 8th in the 100 free last season based on his projected time conversions, in addition to boasting the 2nd-fastest time in the 50 back, putting him in position to be a strong contributor for the Hokies. With several of Virginia Tech’s top backstrokers from last season like Youssef Ramadan and Mario Molla Yanes no longer on the roster, Urbaniak could move up the team rankings when he arrives next fall, depending on how the rest of this season shakes out.
Currently set to join Urbaniak in Blacksburg in the fall are Alex Parent, Matthew Wolfle and Alex Grocholski, who should all make for strong training partners over the next four years.
