For more than 36 years, Peter Bergman has portrayed Jack Abbott on CBS’s The Young and the Restless, becoming one of the soap’s most enduring leading men. In a recent interview, the actor reflected on the storyline he considers a defining career highlight.
Speaking with The TV Watercooler’s Jeevan Brar, Bergman appeared alongside longtime co-star Melody Thomas Scott to discuss his early days on the soap, their decades-long collaboration, and the storylines that helped define their characters.
When asked to name a career highlight, Bergman pointed to his earliest days on the show. “It was my introduction to The Young and the Restless,” he said.
Bergman went on to explain the pivotal 1989 storyline that marked Jack Abbot’s return after Terry Lester vacated the role earlier that same year. “Jack came back determined to get Jabot back for his father,” in the storyline, Jabot Cosmetics had recently been acquired and under the control of Victor Neman (Eric Breaden).
“He was going to make a deal with the devil,” Bergman said. Jack’s plan was complicated, “He was going to get Nikki (Scott) to fall for him, to marry him, and then he was going to go to Victor with the deal [to “exchange” Nikki for Jabot].”
As Bergman recalled, the plan unraveled when Jack’s feelings became real. “Just before the deal was to be done – everything had been going perfectly for Jack – Jack realized that he had fallen in love,” he said.
The relationship Jack and Nikki built went on to shape decades of storytelling on The Young and the Restless. The characters married, raised a family, and eventually went their separate ways, with Nikki returning to Victor and Jack now married to Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters). Even so, their shared history remains a cornerstone of the show.
Reflecting on the arc, Bergman praised the material. “That, to me, was just fun writing,” he said. “It was fantastic writing.”
