For certain generations, hearing the brand name "Pacsun" might just bring them back to a certain era.
And now, for the first time in nearly two decades, the casual fashion brand is opening all-new stores, focusing on high-profile locations and even a first move outside the U.S., Forbes reports.
Just when you thought the brand might be destined to close up shop like the mall-based retail landscape in general, the company has opened nine new outlets across the U.S. this year, the magazine also noted on Monday, Dec. 22, with plans to add between 20 and 35 more by the end of 2029. The recent expansion includes flagship openings in Manhattan’s Flatiron district and Orlando’s Mall at Millenia.
“Doubling down on brick-and-mortar simply reflects what our community is already telling us,” said Brieane Olson, Pacsun’s chief executive officer, per Forbes. “Our stores have become cultural touch points for a generation that values experience as much as product.”
The youth fashion brand has also revealed plans for its first international store at the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai, scheduled to open in spring 2026, according to Forbes. This will be the brand’s first footprint outside the U.S. in its 45-year history. Founded in Newport Beach, California in 1980 as Pacific Sunwear of California, the company began with a focus in surf and skate culture before expanding into broader streetwear.
More recently, Pacsun has been able to secure celebrity collaborations from Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner to maintain its trendiness amid a competitive market.
Meanwhile, on the topic of nostalgic casual attire, Costco recently began sellingDickies Women’s Logo Hoodies — which you'd spot at Pacsun, Zumiez or stacked high on display tables at the mall back in the day. Priced at $29.99 and available online only, this throwback sweatshirt channels everything that made the brand a staple in the 2000s.
