After looking into the heinous crime for more than two decades, investigators in Texas have made another arrest in the cold-blooded 2003 murder of a repo man.
Jody Johnston was arrested by police on Monday, December 22, and she has been charged with the capital murder of her former husband, Jerry Don Humphrey. It is the second arrest to be made in the case to date.
Humphrey was found dead in his bed back on December 22, 2003. He was 40 when police say he was shot three times in the back of the head.
Humphrey’s body was found by his father-in-law, who called 911. However, Humphrey was already dead by the time first responders arrived.
Police said that Jody was at work when her father happened upon Humphrey dead in bed. Their two children were also not home at the time, police explained.
Nothing was stolen from the home, according to police, and there were no signs of forced entry.
Back on March 24, 2020, the Stafford Texas Police Department did arrest former Texas State Impound and Recovery Inc. employee Angel Amescua, 44, and identified him as a person directly involved with the chilling murder. Amescua had been fired by Humphrey, according to investigators.
Cops said that newly developed evidence led to Amescua’s arrest in 2020. Amescua has entered not guilty pleas, and his trial has been scheduled for April 7, 2026.
Johnston’s age was not released by police. She did not fight her arrest when police showed up at her door with handcuffs, according to a statement.

“Making an arrest on the 22nd anniversary of this crime serves as a powerful reminder that justice has no expiration date,” offered Stafford Police Lieutenant Luciano Lopez in a statement on the arrest.
It was unclear Tuesday, December 23, if Johnston had entered pleas to the charges she faces. Information on her attorney was also unavailable. Police have yet to speculate on a possible motive for the murder.
Humphrey’s horrific killing served as the subject of an episode of Oxygen Channel’s Cold Justice in 2021 called “Holiday Homicide.”
In the episode, Kelly and Abbey Abbondandolo worked with local police to investigate the cold-blooded killing of the tow truck business owner, and discovered several prior claims of abuse, a series of connected infidelities, and a potential murder-for-hire plot.
The episode helped spark renewed interest in the cold case and was part of the reason the case was eventually reopened in Stafford.
The victim’s sister, Rita Humphrey, has been doing her part to keep the case in the media. In a Facebook post she provided names and contact numbers for investigators in an attempt to make progress.
