Police in Missouri have arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly shooting and killing the mother of his infant child because she stole coins from his collection and used them to purchase alcohol.
Alan Michael Mellow remains in police custody without bond. Investigators allege he killed Hannah Lee Blizard, 30, inside their Monett home, three months after she gave birth to their child.
Mellow has been charged with first-degree murder for allegedly shooting Blizard in front of the newborn.
A statement from police alleges Mellow and Blizard were involved in a “domestic dispute” on Saturday, December 20, inside a vehicle that was parked outside of the apartment complex where they live. The infant was also inside the car during the fight.
“Mellow fired multiple shots at Blizard then returned to his apartment with the child,” reads the statement from Monett Police. “Mellow later surrendered himself and the child to police without incident. Blizard was pronounced dead at the scene.”
The child was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation, the statement explained.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Us Weekly, police arrived at the apartment complex soon after receiving calls about gunfire and found a “bloody” and “lifeless” Blizard on the ground outside the car.
Several law enforcement officers responded to the scene. A highway patrol officer reached Mellow by phone and tried to “convince the suspect to surrender and turn the infant over to police.”
But he resisted, and at one point, yelled to officers, “My son will grow up without a dad,” according to the affidavit.

After being taken into custody, Mellow allegedly opened up to police about Blizard, telling them she “had a severe alcohol addiction that he was trying to help her with.” He told cops they had been “arguing about her alcohol use” in the car and he accused her of stealing “coins from his coin collection,” which he said she “used to purchase alcohol.”
Mellow also allegedly told police Blizard had said she called her mother and was planning on leaving him and taking the baby with her.
“Mellow said he would not allow that and decided to leave himself with the child,” reads the affidavit.
Mellow told investigators he took the baby into the car and that Blizard followed them. When she entered the vehicle, Mellow said he reached for his handgun and shot her “a couple of times” in the head. He then said he took the baby and returned to their apartment.
Mellow is also charged with two counts of armed criminal action and one count of first-degree child endangerment.
It was unclear Tuesday, December 23, if he had entered pleas to those charges.
