ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Local nonprofits are gearing up to serve holiday meals to those facing food insecurity.
At Cameron Community Ministries, the kitchen staff prepared a hot meal with chicken, potatoes and vegetables for visitors on Tuesday. Outside the kitchen, Kevin Connell was waiting for lunch.
“When I’ve had my own troubles and struggles, moving into adulthood, moving into my own life and financial struggles and everything like that, they’ve always filled the void for me,” Connell said. “They’ve always came through for me.”
Executive Director Tamika Madison said Cameron Community Ministries is committed to ensuring no one goes hungry. She took the job three months ago and quickly realized the community’s need for its services.
“I didn’t even realize coming in how big the food insecurity is in this neighborhood,” Madison said. “And I see it now, and it’s very important that we’re able to not only provide the food, but to provide the support services along with it.”
The nonprofit is planning to serve a hot meal on Christmas Eve to potentially hundreds of visitors.
“We probably serve almost 200 meals per day,” Director of Youth Services Mildrena Vega said. “And so we definitely are seeing the need in the community here.”
Cameron Community Ministries relies on community support to provide for its visitors.
“The most important part is the volunteer work. It does take a lot of man-hours to be able to serve a community like this,” Madison said.
They are still in need of kitchen volunteers, clothing house help and monetary donations. Connell said he sees the difference a visit to the kitchen makes in people.
“You see people walking in here a little bit broken. When you see them walking out of here, they’re 100% smiling, and that’s beautiful.”
